The City Planning and Design Branch delivers strategic projects to help create and transform a more liveable and economically viable Brisbane. With a focus on future strategic planning, our people help shape Brisbane through suburban design projects, infrastructure and economic growth.

The Heritage Policy team in particular plays a vital role in protecting Brisbane’s heritage and character. We research, assess, and provide expert advice to ensure the city’s history is respected and integrated into planning decisions. We are a multi-disciplinary team of experts in heritage including historians, planners and architecture and policy specialists, providing strategic planning, policy guidance and advice for the identification, conservation and promotion of heritage places and character areas across Brisbane. Our work helps maintain Brisbane’s identity while supporting growth and development.
The Role
As a Heritage Officer, you will operate both autonomously and in partnership with colleagues to support research, analysis and policy development for heritage places and character areas. With your ability to apply relevant heritage legislation and policy, you will contribute to ongoing assessment, review and implementation of heritage and character best practice, as well as other related projects. Your background may range from history, architecture, planning, built environment, or design and you will have knowledge of ability to combine these related skill sets within the heritage conservation field.
Achieving quality outcomes in this role will see you collaborating effectively with internal and external partners and customers, so your communication and relationship management skills will be well placed. This is an opportunity to apply your knowledge of history and heritage in a practical way, influencing how Brisbane grows while preserving its unique identity.
To be successful you will have:
- tertiary qualifications in architecture, history, heritage conservation, or a related discipline
- strong research and analytical skills with the ability to prepare detailed reports
- ability to interpret heritage legislation and apply appropriate policies in a practical context
- excellent written and verbal communication skills to provide clear advice to a wide range of stakeholders
- proficiency in commonly used computer systems and software
- knowledge of Brisbane’s history and development, and familiarity with archival sources and a current ‘C’ class drivers' licence is desirable but not essential.
