The Opportunity
Our Geotechnical & Tunnels team is on the lookout for an Associate Geotechnical Engineer to join us in Queensland.
We offer hybrid working and flexible locations, Brisbane, Gold Coast, or Sunshine Coast, so you can base yourself where it suits you best and work from home 2 days per week when you’re not required on site.
You will lead and deliver geotechnical services across diverse infrastructure and development projects. From site investigations and testing to foundation design, earthworks, and risk assessments, this role requires deep technical expertise and clear communication with clients and project teams.
In this role, you will:
- Lead and oversee geotechnical aspects of projects, providing technical direction and ensuring best practices are followed throughout the project lifecycle
- Manage geotechnical projects or components, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, and quality control
- Plan and supervise site investigations, including borehole drilling, in-situ testing (SPT, CPT, pressuremeter, etc.), sampling, and monitoring
- Perform advanced geotechnical analyses, including slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, liquefaction assessment, and seismic response. Design foundations (shallow and deep), earth retaining structures, ground improvement solutions, and pavements
- Prepare high-quality technical reports, feasibility studies, design documents, and specifications
- Identify geotechnical risks and develop mitigation strategies
- Manage client relationships, attend meetings, and provide geotechnical advice and presentations
- Mentor and train junior geotechnical engineers and technicians
- Ensure all geotechnical activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations and company policies
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies, software, and methods in geotechnical engineering
The team
WSP’s Geotechnical & Tunnels division unites more than 400 geotechnical, geological, and tunneling consultants nationwide, recognised for their expertise, collaborative spirit, and commitment to best practice.
By joining us, you will enjoy the best of both worlds: the resources and high-calibre colleagues of a major consultancy, and the opportunity to solve a diverse array of technical challenges; from local site investigations to landmark mega-projects in the infrastructure, mining, property, and building sectors.
About You
You will be able to demonstrate:
- Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field (Master’s degree preferred)
- Chartered or Professional Engineer status (or eligibility) is highly desirable
- A minimum of 8-12 years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience, ideally in consulting, infrastructure, or construction projects
- Demonstrated expertise in ground investigation, geotechnical analysis, and design of foundations, earthworks, and retaining structures
- Proficiency in geotechnical software (e.g., PLAXIS, GeoStudio, Slope/W, Settle3D, LPILE, gINT, or equivalent)
- Thorough understanding of relevant codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., AS/NZS, Eurocode, AASHTO)
- Strong report writing, communication, and presentation skills
- Proven ability to manage projects, budgets, and teams
- Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites as required
