The Power Station Fitter reports to the Supervisor – Power Station. The main purpose of this position is to provide preventative and corrective maintenance and repairs on 7X Wartsila W20L9 installed engines and auxiliary equipment in all areas of the Power Station (HFO) including the Separators, water/fuel/lube oil pumps, compressors/pneumatics/hydraulics and other mechanical equipment.

The person will perform predictive/preventive/corrective repair and maintenance of the Power Station engines and auxiliary equipment are carried out and completes, on-time, delivery of maintenance services to ensure compliance with company standards for cost control, quality, safety, efficiency and equipment reliability are achieved.

This is a FIFO position, with a 15:13 roster. Point of Hire available: Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Tabar Islands Group, Alotau, Buka, Goroka, Hoskins, Madang, Popondetta and Wapenamanda.

Role Accountabilities

  • Disassemble, repair and reassemble mechanical components of engines and auxiliary equipment to include air compressors, air filter systems, separators, cooling water pumps, fuel system pumps, lube oil systems and exhaust piping repairs, heat exchangers, piping, and associated equipment in accordance with safe operating procedures.
  • Performs predictive/preventive/corrective maintenance to include disassembles, repairs, and reassembles mechanical components on engines, auxiliary equipment, and other mechanical systems.
  • Utilize Wartsila maintenance manuals, periodical and service manuals as required to troubleshoot and repair all power plant equipment.
  • Completes maintenance records and documents all maintenance performed and maintains maintenance logbooks and databases as required.
  • Perform Wartsila Engines Schedule maintenance in minor and major services of all engines as required.
  • Schedule maintenance and repair work in a continuously operating Power Station with a full understanding of the impact of the work on the maintenance operations of the Power Plant.
  • Liaise with Power Station Operator over of all fault Alarms / Parameters of Engines and auxiliaries, Monitoring, and analysis of trends of data pertaining to equipment’s at all times and making proper follow up in this regard.
  • Operate, monitor and service all HFO Plant and equipment including heavy fuel oil separators, fuel / day tanks, and sludge incinerator, chlorination, and demineralisation plants, on site standby generators.
  • To comply with all safety regulations including isolation, lock out and tag out and Perform emergency procedures to protect personnel and equipment in case of damage or failure of safety devices.
  • Actively participate in all departmental activities, including skills training, shift handover communications, toolbox meetings and any other activities as required by the supervisor.
  • Encourage all personnel in maintenance team to comply with all SGCL policies and procedures.
  • Accept personal responsibility for following up on training and development needs identified for you by your supervisor and Wartsila team.
  • Carry out all tasks with consideration for cost savings and efficiency. Take care of all SGCL property and equipment.
  • Actively participate in a culture of best OH&S practice in the work group through leading by example, mentoring and development of junior work-group personnel.
  • Meet or exceed on-job OH&S standards, by carrying out all tasks to SGCL safety policies and reporting OH&S issues.
  • Ensuring that HSEC incidents are reported and assist in investigations to identify any additional controls required.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience required:

  • A minimum level of Grade 10 education.
  • Technical Trades qualification in related field
  • Minimum 3 – 5 years’ experience required in Wartsila powered generators, marine diesel engines, or industrial diesel engines within a mining environment through similar maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude and to work efficiently in a stressful environment is required.
  • Previous mechanical experience in working on 10MW Power plant or other similar and larger diesel engine/generators is highly preferred.
  •  Demonstrated knowledge in all aspects of mechanical maintenance, monitoring and knowledge of Wartsila engines, HFO/Lube Oil separation units and related plant & equipment.
  • A sound awareness of operational safety issues.
  • Good computer literacy – exposure to computerized control systems in a power generation environment.
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills in English.
  • An ability to follow established procedures and to have the self-discipline to complete work on time with minimal supervision.
