We are currently seeking a Environment Officer – Chemist to join our team. permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Environment Supervisor, the primary purpose of this role is to ensure sampling programs and assaying techniques across the Environmental Team and facilities meet the required standard to ensure the operation generates a robust dataset the meets required quality standards.

The role incumbent and manager will identify and review the specific compliance requirements of the role.

The opportunity

Technical Accountabilities

  • Develop and maintain QA/QC in all water monitoring aspects of Environmental Management and Monitoring Program (EMMP)
  • Field sampling and handling protocol
  • Maintenance of the in-field pH, DO, conductivity capability.
  • Maintenance of sample bottles and preservatives inventories
  • Supervision of sample preparation and dispatch including chains of custody
  • Ensure quality of data for input into the environmental database system
  • Assist to ensure that Environmental Reporting to the internal stakeholders is accurate and consistent and in a timely manner.
  • Training of Environmental Assistants in correct sampling techniques, and use of infield monitoring equipment
  • Infield QA/QC review of Environmental Assistants field sampling activities
  • Management of the DSTP laboratory
  • Management of the Environment Department Mini Lab
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs)

 Environment Department accountabilities

  • Assist with the implementation of Environmental Monitoring Programs
  • Assist with managing Environmental Improvement Projects on site
  • Conduct environmental inspections and report finding with appropriate corrective actions
  • Assist in delivering environmental training and awareness programs to site personnel.
  • Participate in training provided by the business
  • Attend to environmental complaints.
  • Assist in developing and reviewing procedures, forms, checklists, and registers
  • Manage effective use of available resources, including own time.
  • Contribute to the development of capability within the team
  • Perform other environmental or administrative tasks requested by the Environment management team

 Safety and Health

  • Comply with established Health and Safety policies and practices.
  • Take responsibility for the reporting of incidents, including any injury or near miss to the to your appropriate supervisor or the health and safety team in a timely manner
  • Assist with implement new health & safety initiative and or statistics

Essential

  • Behavior consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • Undergraduate degree related to Environmental Chemistry or Applied Science
  • At least three (3) years’ experience in laboratory activities
  • Experience with field monitoring programs
  • Light vehicle driving licence
  • Proficient in relevant Microsoft Office Applications.

 Desirable

  • Experience in the mining industry extractive industry
  • Experience with training laboratory staff and field sampling teams
