We are currently seeking a Environment Officer – Database Specialist to join our team. permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Environment Supervisor, the primary purpose of this role is to maintain environmental databases so that a quality robust dataset is available for legal requirement to provide the operation with quality data in a timely manner to enable data to be used as an input to operational planning and continual environmental performance improvements.

The role incumbent and manager will identify and review the specific compliance requirements of the role.

The opportunity

Technical Accountabilities

  • Ensure a quality database is maintained providing a robust dataset that the operation can use for it’s legal and operational requirements
  • Data to be made available to environment team and other internal stakeholders to inform operational decisions
  • Ensure required data is available for reporting requirements
  • Ensure all external laboratory results are quality checked and uploaded into database
  • Manage and rationalize databases
  • Carry out routine QA/QC of database to ensure correct data is maintained.
  • Training of staff in use of databases as required.
  • Ensure all data relating to EMMP is updated to show monthly environmental performance against permit conditions and raise non-conformances to Environmental management
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs)

 Environment Department accountabilities

  • Assist with the implementation of Environmental Monitoring Programs
  • Assist with managing Environmental Improvement Projects on site
  • Conduct environmental inspections and report finding with appropriate corrective actions
  • Assist in delivering environmental training and awareness programs to site personnel.
  • Participate in training provided by the business
  • Attend to environmental complaints.
  • Assist in developing and reviewing procedures, forms, checklists, and registers
  • Manage effective use of available resources, including own time.
  • Contribute to the development of capability within the team
  • Perform other environmental or administrative tasks requested by the Environment management team

 Safety and Health

  • Comply with established Health and Safety policies and practices.
  • Monitor safety in the workplace by identifying and addressing hazards, participating in improving safety
  • Comply with requirements for Take 3s, Hazard Identification, and other safety monitoring requirements
  • Report all incidents and near misses in a timely manner
  • Contribute to the continual improvement of the sites safety systems

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • Undergraduate degree in science or equivalent technical qualification and or experience.
  • At least three (3) years of relevant industry experience
  • At least three (3) years’ experience in database management.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office Applications.

Desirable

  • Extractive industry experience.
  • Light vehicle Drivers’ License
  • Experience in MP5 software
  • Experience in GIS software
