We are currently seeking a Graduate Exploration Geologist to join our team. permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Exploration Superintendent, the primary purpose of this role is to contribute to leading St Barbara’s exploration activities at Simberi, Papua New Guinea in a manner consistent with the Company’s Vision, business strategy, Values, policies and compliance obligations

The role incumbent and manager will identify and review the specific compliance requirements of the role.

The opportunity

Technical Accountabilities

  • Contributing to ensuring the health and safety of all personnel associated with the Simberi exploration activities
  • Ensuring the effective use of the appropriate processes, and identifying and recommending improvements
  • Collecting, managing, and interpreting geoscientific data (eg, geological mapping, QA/QC management, geological modelling, core logging, sampling) to produce high quality geological outputs consistent with Company objectives
  • Proper planning and assistance with managing FY24, FY25, and FY26 Simberi Sulphide drilling program through to decision points that deliver sound outcomes.
  • Contributing to ensuring that the Papua New Guinea exploration function meets all relevant internal and external compliance obligations and is considered a welcome guest in host communities.
  • Providing timely, accurate and relevant drill reporting (daily, weekly and monthly) to the Exploration manager - Simberi, Exploration Superintendent and other internal and external parties as appropriate.
  • Contributing to process improvement and to building the Company’s capability in geology, exploration and business development, especially with respect to professionals and para-professionals in Level 1 roles.
  • Contributing productively as a member of the Simberi Exploration Leadership Team.

Scheduling accountabilities

  • Contributing to developing, implementing and reporting against the FY24, FY25, and FY26 Simberi Sulphide drilling program plans.

 People accountabilities

  • Ensuring own work performance meets all role and business plan requirements
  • Maintaining good relations with the communities within which we work
  • Fostering positive relationships with contractors and stakeholders
  • Assisting with training and skill development of new field employees in the Exploration Team.

Essential

  • Behavior consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • A BSc degree in a relevant geoscience discipline
  • Sound knowledge of safety requirements relevant to exploration
  • Prepared to work out of remote fly camps in challenging conditions
  • Prepare and demonstrate aptitude to learn on-the-job of knowledge of exploration and drilling techniques including RC drilling, diamond drilling and trenching
  • Able to supervise field teams to maintain best practice exploration procedures
  • Prepared and able to assist the management of multiple competing demands of the FY25 & FY26 Sulphide drilling objectives
  • Prepared to organise work, set priorities and exercise sound independent judgement
  • Sound geoscientific knowledge, including understanding of structural controls on gold mineralisation at regional to local scale, as well as an ability to produce geological interpretations
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills, team focus, as well as organisation skills to deliver project outcomes

Desirable

  • A degree qualification in geology or mineral sciences
  • Exposure to gold deposits in epithermal and porphyry geological settings in the South West Pacific
  • Demonstrated strategic and analytic thinking
  • Sound theoretical knowledge of deposit genesis, models and exploration techniques applicable to epithermal and porphyry gold deposits
  • Prepared and ready to work in a remote location and operate in wet, tropical and steep environments
  • Successful work experience in a Melanesian country or in other developing countries
  • Proficient pidgin speaker
