Senior Exploration Geologist

Simberi Gold Limited is a 50:50 joint venture between St Barbara Limited and Lingbao Gold. Our Simberi Operations consist of an open cut mine on the northernmost Island in the Tabar group of islands in the province of New Ireland in Papua New Guinea. We are currently seeking to recruit a Senior Exploration Geologist to join our highly dynamic workforce. This is a Fixed Term position within our Simberi Operations. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working on a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Buka, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo & the Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Exploration Superintendent, the Senior Exploration Geologist is responsible to contribute to leading New Simberi Gold’s exploration activities at Simberi, Papua New Guinea in a manner consistent with the Company’s Vision, business strategy, Values, policies and compliance obligations. Contributing to leading the Simberi (Papua New Guinea) exploration activity of a gold explorer, developer and producer with exploration tenements and open pit gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea.

The opportunity

Technical accountabilities 

• Ensuring the effective use of the appropriate systems, and identifying and recommending system improvements.
• Producing high quality geological outputs (e.g., QA/QC management, core logging, and core sampling) consistent with the requirements of the FY24, FY25, FY26, and FY27 Simberi Sulphide drilling program and EL609 work programmes.
• Collecting, managing, and interpreting reliable geoscientific data and using the data to produce and maintain the required reports and related products.
• Proper planning and assistance with managing FY24, FY25, FY26, and FY27 Simberi Sulphide drilling program and EL609 work programmes through to decision points that deliver sound outcomes.
• Contributing to ensuring that the Papua New Guinea exploration function meets all relevant internal and external compliance obligations and is considered a welcome guest in host communities.
• Providing timely, accurate and relevant drill reporting (daily, weekly and monthly) to the Exploration manager - Simberi, Exploration Superintendent and other internal and external parties as appropriate.
• Contributing to process improvement and to building the Company’s capability in geology, exploration and business development, especially with respect to professionals and para-professionals in Level 1 roles.
• Contributing productively as a member of the Simberi Exploration Leadership Team.

Scheduling accountabilities

• Contributing to developing, implementing and reporting against the FY24, FY25, FY26, and FY27 Simberi Sulphide drilling program and EL609 work programmes plans.
• Managing effective and efficient use of the available resources including own time, in support of the development and delivery of the FY24, FY25, FY26, and FY27 Simberi Sulphide drilling program and EL609 work programmes plans.

People accountabilities

• Contributing to building, developing and leading an effective and increasingly capable Papua New Guinea exploration team.
• Ensuring the work performance of self and direct reports meets all role and business plan requirements.
• Coaching and developing the Exploration personnel in Level 1 roles.
• Maintaining good relations with the communities within which we work.

Essential

• Behaviour consistent with New Simberi Gold’s Values
• A BSc degree in a relevant geoscience discipline
• Between 7 to 15 years relevant and successful experience in the mining industry
• Previous experience using 3D modelling software and a ability to efficiently learn and operate Micromine software to manage drill
• A demonstrated strong capability in applying Health, Safety and Environment Policies, Procedures and Standards to exploration
• Prepared to work out of remote fly camps in challenging conditions
• Sound knowledge of exploration and drilling techniques including RC drilling, diamond drilling and trenching
• Able to supervise the geologists to maintain best practice exploration procedures
• Ability to successfully manage multiple competing priorities and reconciling these with the FY24, FY25, FY26, and FY27 Simberi Sulphide drilling program and EL609 work programmes objectives
• Demonstrated capacity to make sound short-term tactical decisions – quickly assembling and interpreting data to successfully action priorities
• Demonstrated capability in organising work, setting priorities and exercising sound independent judgement
• Strong ability to lead and work effectively with people
• High energy and level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals for self and team
• Strong interpersonal, influencing and communication skills
• Demonstrated willingness to explore and embrace different cultures
• Preparedness to learn and use pidgin with the local employees

• Experience using Mapinfo, ArcGIS, Micromine and Datashed software packages
• Ability to efficiently generate accurate 3D geological models from surface mapping and drilling in Micromine

Desirable

• A post-graduate degree qualification in geology or mineral sciences
• Exposure to gold deposits in epithermal and porphyry geological settings in the South West Pacific
• Proven record of economic discovery and project delivery
• Demonstrated strategic and analytic thinking
• Good understanding of open cut mine geology practices
• Knowledge of deposit genesis, models and exploration techniques applicable to epithermal and porphyry gold deposits
• Strong track record in business improvement
• Experience working in a remote location and operating in wet, tropical and steep environments
• Successful work experience in a Melanesian country or in other developing countries
• Proficient pidgin speaker
