The School of Engineering is one of the most research-intensive Schools within the University. The School consists of four discipline groupings: Civil and Environmental Engineering and Surveying; Chemical and Renewable Energy Engineering; Electrical and Electronic, Computer Systems and Medical; Aerospace Systems, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering. The School is home to many leading-edge research centres and has strong links with industry through sponsored undergraduate students and research collaborations.
The School is highly research active, contributing substantially to the overall research inputs and outputs of the CESE. This is reflected in the 2018 Excellence in Research in Australia outcomes where Electrical, Civil, Mechanical and Resource Engineering codes all received an ERA5.

The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a Lecturer with a passion for teaching and a flair for research in specialist areas underpinned by Mechanical Engineering. The successful candidate will have the ability to work autonomously, multi-task and prioritise to provide adaptive teaching methods and enhance the learning experience by combining streamlined online delivery methods with interactive in-person sessions. You will also have capability and eagerness to engage and network with external associations, to secure research funding and to assist industry in solving highly complex technical problems.
The essential criteria for success include:
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related fields.
- Demonstrated high-quality contribution to research, particularly in areas such as integrated design for cyber-physical systems and bulk material handling.
- Demonstrated recent record of successfully taking a chief investigator role (often in conjunction with more experienced researchers) in funding initiatives and obtaining, competitive, external research funding.
- Demonstrated recent active supervision of honours and masters research projects as well as Higher Degree by Research students.
- Demonstrated recent ability to contribute at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate levels in areas including finite element analysis (FEA) and integrated mechanical engineering design.
- Demonstrated recent ability to efficiently perform in allocated internal roles, sharing academic service responsibilities, contributing to outcomes of internal committees, and beginning to develop external collaborations.

How will we inspire you?
Reporting to Professor Dianne Wiley, Dean and Head of School Engineering, the successful candidate will provide vision and leadership in the mechanical engineering field and foster excellence in research, teaching and professional activities
This position offers the opportunity to assist in shaping the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) program and the Master of Professional Engineering (Mechanical) by providing a high-quality and engaging learning environment for undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students. The successful applicant will define and develop a research program that brings the University of Newcastle to the forefront of mechanical engineering research nationally and internationally.
In this role you will be responsible for:
- Developing a portfolio of sustained and significant research performance to attract undergraduate and postgraduate students to the discipline.
- Contribution to attracting industry-based research support and competitive external grant funding at national and international level.
- Enhancing student learning and experience by delivering a relevant curriculum.
- Contribute to teaching and/or teaching development in the broader areas of Mechanical Engineering, especially including HDR student supervision.
What we offer
This position will be offered as a level B, continuing/permanent position.
The remuneration range is from $103,221 - $122,576 + 17% superannuation and leave loading.
