About the role

The Environmental Lead will be accountable for assurance of the environmental and sustainability aspects of assigned major projects through the delivery phase of the project lifecycle. You will:

  • Provide environmental leadership and advice to multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Implement and ensure consistency, accuracy, and efficiency across Sydney Water’s Environmental Management system within Major Projects.
  • Liaise with relevant authorities in respect to Environmental approvals. Licences, permits and other relevant matters.
  • Work closely with our Contractors to ensure compliance, project KPIs, and goal expectations are met.
  • Review and endorse Contractors environmental management documentation.
  • Identify, develop and deliver environmental training awareness and educational programs.
  • Conduct environmental site inspections and internal audits, to monitor compliance and drive better environmental outcomes. 

The purpose of the Major Projects business is to lead and manage the prudent, safe, timely and cost-effective development and delivery of Sydney Water's Major Project program. To ensure the high profile and strategically important investments we make are delivered successfully in the eyes of our customers, our stakeholders and ourselves. While successful development and the ultimate delivery and handover of significant assets is a key role of Major Projects from a technical perspective, its main focus is on strategy realisation and value creation from a social, environmental, and economic perspective.

About you 

You are a champion for environmental matters with a desire to protect the environment and improve waterway health. You will have prior experience providing environmental advice on large capital infrastructure construction projects. You have a collaborative nature and excellent communications skills, engaging with multiple stakeholder groups to facilitate the delivery of large projects while ensuring these projects have minimal environmental impact and leave a lasting legacy.   

You will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in Science, Environment Engineering or related field, or experience deemed equivalent 7-10 years’ work experience in a similar role within water infrastructure projects
  • Exposure to working with field-based teams to implement management systems and achieve goals
  • Exposure to large construction projects
  • Current knowledge of relevant environmental legislation
  • Exposure to State Significant Infrastructure projects is highly regarded
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and embed improvements in work methods across a program of works
  • Environmental auditing qualifications desired
