About the role

Sydney Water’s large-scale, complex programs require exceptional people to help ensure the successful delivery of a significant program of work– each project ranging from $50m to over $1b.

Reporting to the Cost Manager, this role will offer an opportunity for an experienced Cost Control professional to support successful delivery of commercial contracts and cost management. 

Sydney Water’s Cost team work closely with a range of internal stakeholders to enhance their understanding of cost impacts to their projects, and to enable well informed, data-driven decisions. Cost Controllers guide, influence, and support project teams in managing costs, ensuring that a focus is maintained on delivering outcomes within the allocated budget. 

The role focuses on supporting the development and implementation of cost control processes in alignment with Sydney Water’s overarching financial policies, procedures, and processes. 

Your duties will involve:

  • Working with the project management teams to establish project structures and manage project budgets, estimates-at-completion, and cash flow forecasts to support the project teams in delivering within the agreed budget allocation.
  • Ensuring compliance with business rules pertaining to cost management including alignment of budget, commitment and cost and financial data validation
  • Providing analysis and commentary on projects performance including monthly/quarterly/ad hoc reporting to key stakeholders to ensure that expenditures are kept within the project budget.
  • Reviewing and monitoring project total expenditure including verifying and checking of invoices and claims from suppliers, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure that all project expenditures are captured and properly recorded.
  • Reviewing task orders for contractors and sub-consultants to ensure necessary budget and/or contract capacity exists.

About you

This role will suit someone who enjoys working in high-value, high-volume project environments, driving efficiency and value-add, delivering predictive analytics, productivity and trend management, utilising the latest system technology (SAP/Ariba, InEight, P6).

You must be comfortable providing Cost Control expertise in large project environments ideally in an NEC4 collaborative supply chain arrangement, from a Client-side dealing with a variety of both internal and external stakeholders to deliver robust cost control services.

You will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Project & Construction Management (preferred), Engineering, Commerce or in a similar discipline or experience deemed equivalent.
  • Professional qualifications in construction management, quantity surveying, engineering, or business administration.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in project estimating, cost control and analysis in design and construction and/or maintenance delivery within the infrastructure/utilities sectors
  • Experience developing briefing papers and information packs related to project costs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project accounting policies, project appraisal, project planning & budgeting, and project reporting requirements.
  • Sound technical skills in project cost planning, scheduling, cost control and reporting.
  • Expertise in establishing solutions to address control deficiencies and regulatory exposure by designing sustainable and effective controls and governance frameworks.
