The Operational Inspections & Technical Services team plays a critical role in safeguarding Sydney Water’s assets across our drinking water, recycled water, stormwater, and wastewater networks. Our work helps protect waterways, reduce environmental risks, and ensure essential services continue safely and efficiently.
About the role
We’re looking for a skilled and safety‑focused Operations Technician to join our Operational Inspections & Technical Services team. If you’re passionate about protecting essential water assets, enjoy technical field work, and want to play a key role in safeguarding our environment, this is the job for you.
In this field‑based role, you will work across a wide range of environments and conditions—including uneven terrain, open trenches, confined spaces, live wastewater systems, adverse weather, and long‑distance driving—while ensuring safe, high‑quality, and compliant operational outcomes.
What you’ll be doing
As an Operations Technician, you will:
- Deliver multiple inspection programs across our drinking water, recycled water, stormwater, and wastewater networks.
- Inspect unmanned assets to assess safety, environmental risks, condition, and operational readiness.
- Identify faults and specify corrective actions, including raising and managing MAXIMO work orders.
- Conduct specialist inspections and provide accurate, timely reporting to internal stakeholders.
- Install and maintain IoT devices across the wastewater network.
- Participate in environmental audits and help implement improvement actions.
- Use digital tools (Formsite, PowerApps, HYDRA, Spatial Hub, Maximo, O365, SharePoint) to capture, analyse, and report asset data.
- Support service providers and stakeholders by offering operational expertise and proactive advice.
- Promote Sydney Water’s values and culture through safe work practices, customer focus, and high‑quality outcomes.
What you’ll bring
Required qualifications & licences
- Certificate IV in Water Industry Operations or relevant trade qualifications or equivalent industry experience.
- Current C‑Class (or higher) driver licence.
- WHS General Construction Induction card (White Card).
- Confined space entry certification and ongoing fitness to perform this work.
Desired
- Hold current Dam Safety & Surveillance qualifications or the ability to obtain within 2 years.
Experience we’re looking for
- Demonstrated experience in maintaining and operating water infrastructure or utility assets.
- Strong safety performance and awareness in field environments.
- High levels of attention to detail when performing inspections to ensure accurate assessment, reliable reporting, and effective identification of risks or defects.
- Ability to interpret operational plans, diagrams, and schematics.
- High digital literacy with mobile computing and data entry systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including clear and detailed reporting.
- Ability to work autonomously, manage workload, and collaborate within a high‑performing team.
- Effective stakeholder engagement and problem‑solving skills.
- Awareness of environmental, regulatory, and compliance requirements.
Additional role information
- This role involves physical activity, including walking on uneven terrain, lifting equipment, and regular outdoor work.
- You will be working near and around live wastewater systems; full PPE will be provided.
- You must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident to be considered.
- The successful completion of a Criminal History Check and Medical Assessment forms part of the recruitment process.
- We welcome applicants requiring reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process.
Closing Date: 23rd March 2026.
