 An exciting opportunity has become available for a Senior Media Advisor to join the Brand, Marketing and Media team within Sydney Water.

 In this position, you will support strong and effective working relationships with media, government, and stakeholders, to protect and promote Sydney Water’s corporate reputation and contribute to the delivery of Corporate Plan objectives, while providing advice to internal stakeholders to manage reputation risk in accordance with the socio-political climate.


Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all Sydney Water employees and contractors working within the unit, to implement actions from personal safety action plans and to demonstrate visible safety leadership.
  • Develop responses to media issues, inquiries, and opportunities with other teams (social, internal, community etc) including preparation of media statements, alerts, strategies and releases in a highly effective and timely manner.
  • Work effectively and build trust with the media team in the Minister’s office.
  • Provide advice on media messaging and management approaches and escalate issues when required.
  • Support and prepare the MD and senior managers and spokespeople with media advice and approved media messaging.
  • Keep up to date with emerging media trends and non-traditional media channels and update media and stakeholder strategy accordingly.
  • Maintain external relationships with the Minister’s office, members of Parliament, local Councils, Government Departments and agencies, and other external stakeholders.


Experience and Qualifications:

  • Degree qualifications in communications, journalism, public policy, public relations, business.
  • Valid NSW driver’s licence
  • Exceptional writing skills with the ability to develop compelling content, including media releases, Q&As, talking points, speeches, presentations, strategies, reports, and other content.
  • Ability to identify, plan and execute proactive media opportunities
  • Extensive experience in complex crisis and issues management with the ability to identify and facilitate strategies to mitigate damage to the Sydney Water brand
  • Experience and comfort working in a fast moving and high-pressure working environment
  • Excellent understanding of government relations and experience dealing with executives, Ministers office, ministerial advisors and excellent network of media contacts.
  • This role will require work on weekends and some after-hours work as required as part of an on-call media team, with additional on-call requirements under the Emergency Management Team during any crisis.
