About the Role

Our laboratories and field teams collaborate across chemistry, microbiology, parasitology, ecology, and environmental science, supporting everything from river and beach sampling to wastewater testing, algal monitoring, and calibration services.

As a Water Quality Analyst, you could be:

  • Conducting field sampling across Sydney’s rivers, beaches, and catchments.
  • Performing laboratory-based analysis following NATA-accredited methods.
  • Operating leading-edge analytical instruments from GC and ICP to PCR and microscopy while supporting quality‑assured laboratory work aligned with ISO 17025 and ISO 9001 standards.
  • Preparing water and soil samples for testing, help receive and distribute samples within the lab, and use the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to organise and track work
  • Contributing to environmental and public health outcomes that keep Sydney’s water systems thriving.

You’ll be supported with a structured 6 - 12 month training and development program, building your technical expertise, gaining NATA-accredited competencies, and developing transferable skills across Sydney Water’s research, operations, and innovation teams.

Join a team where your skills keep Sydney moving. Base salary package (Level 1: EA 3 $70,068.28, Level 2 EA 5A: $81,296.04 per year for a 35-hour week, plus super). 

During the recruitment process, the selection panel will assess your suitability for the role and determine whether you will be appointed as a Water Quality Analyst Level 1 or 2 based on your skills, experience, and demonstrated competencies. 

This recruitment will be used to create a pool of qualified applicants for future opportunities both permanent and temporary for up to 2 years within Sydney Water.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re seeking curious, safety minded science professionals who value precision, teamwork, and purpose.

Your experience may include a variety of backgrounds and qualifications in:

  • Tertiary Science qualifications in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Science, or TAFE Qualification in a relevant field or equivalent experience
  • Chemistry, Biology or Field Sampling experience
  • Field sampling, sample preparation, analytical testing, and or use of instrumentation such as field monitoring equipment, GC, IC, ICP, PCR, or microscopy or spectrophotometry
  • Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and ability to follow detailed procedures
  • Competence with computer systems, including LIMS , Microsoft Office and Lab based software systems
  • Effective communication and teamwork in dynamic lab and field settings
  • A valid Driver’s Licence (only required for field sampling)
