Lycopodium is currently recruiting for a Safety & Compliance Manager to join our growing Infrastructure team in Newcastle. 

Reporting to the Managing Director, this rail-focused role will be responsible for maintaining Lycopodium Infrastructure’s safety and compliance performance, with a strong focus on Rail Safety National Law (RSNL), ONRSR expectations, accredited rail operations, Client requirements and our broader certification obligations. The role will support Lycopodium’s rail activities, including our Road Rail Vehicle (RRV) / Rolling Stock Operator (RSO) accreditation in NSW and work undertaken on public and private railways. 

The tasks you'll perform

  • Monitor and maintain Lycopodium’s Safety and Compliance performance across rail projects, public and private railway worksites and RRV operations.
  • Provide practical rail safety and RSNL advice to management, project teams, rail safety workers and Clients.
  • Maintain, review and improve Safety and Compliance systems and rail safety management system requirements to support Lycopodium’s NSW RRV / RSO accreditation and public/private railway work.
  • Plan, manage and coordinate audits, inspections and assurance activities against RSNL, ONRSR, Client, ISO, Australian Standard and accreditation requirements.
  • Confirm project and worksite activities align with Company, Client, regulatory, contractual and accreditation obligations.
  • Support compliance with rail safety worker competence, training, authorisation, supervision and contractor management requirements.
  • Prepare Project Safety and Compliance Plans, rail safety plans, procedures, reports and supporting documentation incorporating Client requirements, statutory requirements and corporate learnings.
  • Lead and support incident reporting, investigation, material-incident escalation, corrective action close-out and improvement actions across Projects.
  • Assist with tenders and proposals by preparing rail safety and compliance inputs, including assessment of contractor management systems and safety performance.
  • Represent Lycopodium in rail safety and compliance discussions with Clients, Rail Infrastructure Managers, contractors, regulators and other stakeholders as required.
  • Provide rail safety consulting services to Clients, including advice on RSNL obligations, rail safety management systems, audits, inspections and assurance requirements. 

The expertise you'll bring

  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in Safety and Compliance management in rail, infrastructure, construction, maintenance or related industries.
  • Strong working knowledge of Rail Safety National Law, ONRSR expectations, rail safety management systems and accredited rail transport operator obligations.
  • Experience supporting or maintaining rail accreditation, authorisation or assurance requirements, ideally including RRV, Rolling Stock Operator, Rail Infrastructure Manager, public/private railway or hi-rail operations.
  • Strong understanding of rail safety risk management, rail safety worker competence, contractor management, audits, inspections and incident management.
  • High attention to detail and exceptional knowledge of Safety and Compliance systems, reporting and document control.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage confidently with Clients, contractors, project teams, senior management and regulators.
  • Intuitive leader with the ability to initiate, lead and manage change while maintaining a practical, field-focused approach.
