Mount Surprise 

Say g’day to more of Australia and join us at Discovery Mount Surprise, home to one of the world’s longest lava-tube cave systems, formed over 190,000 years ago. This tourism icon is on the doorstep of a world-class geological phenomenon, and just three and a half hours by car from Cairns, easily accessible from the Savannah Way. Join our team in Tropical Far North Queensland and explore this authentic outback experience with various cabins and camper sites — the perfect setting to connect people to nature, networks and communities. 

The Role

Mount Surprise offers a diverse range of accommodation, dining and natural attractions to guests from March until November when the popular destination closes for Wet Season. As a Tour Guide you are central to ensuring our guests experience the very highest levels of service and safety while on our tours. Tour Guides are an integral part of the properties daily operations from transfers in and out of property to Guided tours of the iconic Undara lava tubes. 

If you like the idea of a job that involves exploration and educating guests, and you are passionate about working outdoors, this role is for you. 

Skills & Experience

  • Highly developed guest service skills; 
  • Strong interest in wildlife and nature; 
  • Ability to work well under pressure and autonomously; 
  • High energy and active, some of the tours have unsteady footing; 
  • Self-motivation to learn and expand your knowledge of the area; 
  • Ability to work as part of a tight knit team; 
  • Ability to talk to groups and take them along a journey; 
  • Previous experience with Tour Guiding or within the tourism industry preferable; 
  • Membership with Savannah Guides preferable; 

Preferred Qualifications - Company willing to assist in gaining these on commencement of offer: 

  • Manual Driver's License; 
  • Queensland LR License - Needs to be obtained prior to season commencing; 
  • Queensland Drivers Authorisation - Needs to be obtained prior to season commencing; 
  • Senior First Aid Certificate include CPR 
  • Relevant qualification in either Guiding/Environmental/Education is an advantage.

This is a remote role, where you will be living and working at Undara. As such, please consider the reality of living in a remote location for an extended period of time. This role includes extensive manual handling tasks including lifting up to 20kg kneeling and squatting, as well as handling chemicals and utilising machinery
