About the Department

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a formal partnership to deliver a Shared Pathology Service as one of three new pathology networks for metropolitan Melbourne. In the Partnership, pathology services are provided from two main laboratories (The Alfred in Prahran and Monash Medical Centre in Clayton), and seven branch laboratories (Casey Hospital, Dandenong Hospital, Footscray Hospital, Moorabbin Hospital, Sandringham Hospital, Sunshine Hospital and Wonthaggi Hospital). In addition, there are collection centres and rooms spread across Western Melbourne, South East Melbourne and South Gippsland, with the furthest one located in Yarram.

About the Role

A rare and exciting opportunity exists in our laboratory located at The Alfred to manage the day-to-day operation of a busy, complex NATA accredited Biochemistry laboratory. We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated scientist with relevant training and experience to fill the position of Principal Scientist Clinical Biochemistry, Alfred Health Pathology. This is a rewarding position with great opportunities for job diversity and professional advancement. Together with the responsibility for managing the scientific output comes the chance to be involved in developing the service and the employees who deliver it. The laboratory performs over 2 million tests per annum and has three sections, the urgent and routine section, a highly automated testing area using equipment on a total laboratory automation track, the special chemistry section performing a range of techniques such as, electrophoresis, trace metals using ICPMS and specialised immunoassays across a number of platforms and the drug testing section which performs specialised therapeutic drug testing and drugs of abuse identification using a number of high-end LCMSMS analysers. Calculus analysis and testing of Haemoglobin variants is also performed in this section. In this role it will be important to provide leadership to promote a high level of professional development, a work environment that engenders positive energy, creativity and teamwork among employees.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential

  • A scientist with more than 10 years’ experience who a recognised discipline leader within their health service. Possesses higher level interpretative and scientific skills and is responsible for management of their department. This includes managing the budget of their department, human resources (including but not limited to staff recruitment and training) and has overall scientific responsibility for their department including ensuring that their department meets NATA requirements.

Desirable

  • Indicators of this position may include either relevant post graduate qualifications (or progress towards the same) and/or being, or having been, a NATA assessor.
  • Research, management or other special expertise.
