The Department

The Operations Support Unit is responsible for the management of the resources and activities that support hospital operations 24/7. The Operations Support Unit reports through the Emergency, Virtual Care & Outpatients program and has the key responsibility for strategic planning and day to day operations for patient access, patient flow, demand management and bed modelling.

The Role

The Patient Flow Coordinator (PFC) supports the Clinical Operations Manager (COM), to facilitate patient flow and hospital operations 24/7. The Patient Flow Coordinator will be an experienced nurse with a strong clinical background who can demonstrate skills in communication, problem solving and teamwork. You will work in conjunction with all stakeholders to ensure the appropriate usage of available beds for all incoming patients. The Patient Flow Coordinator will also monitor, source and allocate replacement staff for clinical areas and provide immediate code response where appropriate.

Professional Practice

  • Role models effective interpersonal skills and behaviours 
  • Builds relationships and communicates effectively with the interdisciplinary team 
  • Works with the Clinical Operations Manager to support clinical decision-making and problem solving 
  • Escalates to the Clinical Operations Manager any significant and/or complex operational issues 
  • Reports, documents and addresses incidents and adverse events as appropriate

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Current Registered Nurse Division 1 registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia via APHRA
  • Strong clinical background in Acute health sector with strong professional identity 
  • Evidence of relevant post graduate studies (or working towards) highly desirable 
  • Recent nursing experience in an acute health service 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including: 
    • Effective organisational and interpersonal skills 
    • Proven ability to make timely, accurate and informed decisions in a pressured environment 
    • Proven ability in managing complex situations 
    • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and confront issues 
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team, with a range of staff at various levels 
    • Proven ability to embrace change and an ability to facilitate the change process 
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and inspire staff to achieve commonly held goals 
  • An understanding of Alfred Health beliefs 
  • An understanding and willingness to embrace Information technology
