The Department

Alfred Health’s Physiotherapy Department provides acute physiotherapy services to the patients of The Alfred and Sandringham Hospital and subacute physiotherapy services to Caulfield Hospital.  

The physiotherapy service at Caulfield Hospital provides an extensive range of inpatient and ambulatory services in the areas of rehabilitation, aged care and residential care services. The physiotherapy service provides subacute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: neurology, non-traumatic spinal cord injury, orthopaedics, amputees, burns, complex regional pain, cardiac rehabilitation, aged care, transitional care and aged psychiatry. The physiotherapy department is organised into functional streams: Neurological Rehabilitation, Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, Health of Older Persons (HOP) and ABI.  

The Alfred Health Physiotherapy Department has more than 100 EFT and employs over 170 staff. The physiotherapy service has a proud history of clinical and academic excellence.  It remains strongly committed to further pursuing excellence in physiotherapy through clinical research. The Alfred Health Physiotherapy Department is a major partner in the Alfred Health Physiotherapy Clinical Schools for both La Trobe and Monash Universities and in this role provides core and elective clinical placements for more than 50 undergraduate physiotherapy students.   

The Concussion Clinic

The Alfred Health Concussion Clinic is based at Caulfield Hospital and provides an assessment and management service for people presenting with concussion. The multidisciplinary clinic consists of a Neurologist, Occupational therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech pathologist and Psychologist.

The aim of the service is to:

• Manage, coordinate and provide comprehensive, individualised and evidenced-based care for the treatment and management of concussion symptoms
• Include a variety of service such as screenings, assessments, diagnostics, treatment planning, therapeutic interventions, education, and follow-up care. The team provide resources to assist patients, families and providers better understand the process of concussion assessment and management
• Reduce re-presentations to the Emergency Department and Primary Care Clinics

The service is underpinned by a culture of patient safety, excellence in service delivery and continuous quality improvement using current, and emerging, evidence in clinical practice. An active research program will underpin the service model, ensuring ongoing service evaluation and the development of new evidence, and translation into practice.

The Role

The Senior Clinician Physiotherapist (Concussion Clinic) is responsible for the ongoing development and provision of physiotherapy services to patients with concussion. The role provides leadership into the development of a collaborative multidisciplinary team approach; to achieve optimal patient care and outcomes with minimised clinical risk.The Senior Clinician Physiotherapist (Concussion Clinic) is responsible for leading and providing expert input into quality improvement and/or research activities in the relevant area. They lead a culture of ongoing learning and development in the team, and provide supervision and mentoring to junior physiotherapists, students and allied health assistants where relevant.

As a member of the Neurological Rehabilitation Physiotherapy stream, the position may also be required to provide Physiotherapy services into other relevant clinical areas, in collaboration with the stream leader and Physiotherapy Manager. The Senior Clinician Physiotherapist (Concussion Clinic) has an important role contributing to the development of individuals, the clinical team and the physiotherapy service through good leadership, teamwork and communication. 

Experience and Qualifications Required

• Registered to practice in the state of Victoria (AHPRA) 
• Demonstrated advanced knowledge and skills in the provision of physiotherapy services in the relevant areas of physiotherapy.   
• Demonstrated ability to plan and manage a caseload, including the coordination of other staff 
• Demonstrated ability to undertake quality initiatives 
• Demonstrated ability to supervise students, grade 2 and grade 1 staff 
• Demonstrated communication skills 
• Demonstrated time management skills
