The Department
Alfred Health’s Multidisciplinary Allied Health Assistant Department provides support to a broad range of allied health professionals across all three sites at Alfred Health: The Alfred Hospital, Caulfield Hospital, and Sandringham Hospital. The department consists of more than 25EFT, and employs a large pool of casual staff. The department continues to develop partnerships with education providers, providing placement opportunities for students undertaking Allied Health Assistant qualifications.
The service at The Alfred Hospital is organised into multiple functional streams that works across our emergency department, acute wards, including our statewide services, outpatients, and home-based services. Our service at Caulfield Hospital and Sandringham Hospital is organised into different wards, with allied health assistants providing support to an allocated team.
The ABI Unit
The Alfred Health Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Rehabilitation Centre provides a state-wide rehabilitation service for people with moderate to severe acquired brain injuries including traumatic brain injuries, stroke, hypoxic brain injuries and other causes of non-progressive brain injury. It provides assessment, rehabilitation and care planning for patients with complex needs following an ABI. The service is comprised of a 36-bed inpatient rehabilitation service, a community rehabilitation service and a 4-bed transitional living service.
The service is underpinned by a culture of patient safety, excellence in service delivery and continuous quality improvement through the use of current, and emerging, evidence in clinical practice. An active research program will also underpin the service model, ensuring ongoing service evaluation and the development and translation of new evidence into practice.
Whilst this position is advertised for the ABI Unit, it is important to be aware that the staff member may be required to work in/rotate to other areas of ABI Service as required. This position may also be required to work on weekends or outside normal business hours as necessary.
The Role
The Grade 3 Allied Health Assistant (AHA) will be primarily located on-site at Caulfield Hospital and works closely with the multidisciplinary Allied Health team to provide a flexible and responsive service that works to meet each patient’s identified therapeutic and discharge goals.
The position is responsible for the implementation of individual interventions and/or therapy programs, as delegated by the treating therapists. The AHA will work as part of the multidisciplinary team to provide services that include provision of delegated therapies, provision of appropriate equipment and aids as prescribed by Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), assistance with paperwork and referrals to facilitate discharge, and liaison with external providers to obtain information to progress care or facilitate discharge. The AHA will also be responsible for administrative and clinical support functions, which assist with patient management and contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of the team.
The Grade 3 Allied Health Assistant is expected to lead and actively contribute to an assigned department portfolio, as well as leading the supervision of allied health assistant students. The Grade 3 AHA is also expected to undertake regular supervision with an assigned supervisor, and are expected to supervise grade 2 AHAs when required.
Experience and Qualifications Required
- Completion of Certificate IV (Allied Health Assistance) from a registered training organisation, with a minimum of 3 years of work experience OR
- Worked as a Grade 2 Allied Health Assistant for a minimum of 3 years (full-time equivalent) OR
- Recognised equivalent qualification (as determined by the line manager), ie: Overseas-trained Allied Health practitioner with a qualification at Diploma level or higher
