About us

Alfred Mental & Addiction Health (AMAH) is responsible for the operation of services which focus on people with a mental illness residing in the Inner South Eastern area of Melbourne.

The Greenhouse is an acute inpatient assessment unit at the Alfred Hospital which consists of 15 beds and is staffed on an interdisciplinary model with 24-hour nursing care. As it is a unit treating patients with acute conditions there is an expectation that patients will be discharged to their original address or other more appropriate environments as soon as they are ready for discharge.

The Role

The Carer Peer Worker works in conjunction with our clinical team to provide support to family members or other carers in the network of the consumer. Carers/family members and friends often provide the main safety net and support system for a consumer. Evidence shows that when carers/family and friends are involved with services, outcomes for consumers improve.

The aim of Carer Peer Support is to:

  • minimise the impact of complex mental health issues on carers and significant others of consumers within the service;
  • and support the engagement of carers/families and significant others with the service in order to enhance the process of recovery for consumers experiencing serious mental health challenges.
