Unit Head, Anatomical Pathology

The Alfred/Monash Shared Pathology Service is seeking an experienced Anatomical Pathologist to play a pivotal role in shaping the future anatomical pathology at Alfred and Western Health and contribute to the future of public pathology services across Monash Health, Alfred Care Group (part of Bayside Health) and Western Health. 

Following the issuing of Victoria’s Pathology Framework Reform Implementation Plan (2025) in October, Bayside Health is to lead one of two public pathology networks with laboratories and collection centres across South East Melbourne, South Gippsland and the expanding Western Health footprint.  The position leads anatomical pathology in the GX laboratory in Prahran and responsible for the provision of anatomical pathology services across the Alfred Care Group and Western Health.


The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and visionary anatomical pathologist as Unit Head, Anatomical Pathology to provide expert clinical leadership, strategic direction and operational management across our Anatomical Pathology services. This senior medical leadership role reports to the Program Director, Alfred Pathology Service, and plays a critical role in shaping the future of anatomical pathology across Bayside Health in collaboration with the Unit Head Anatomical Pathology service based at Clayton.


About the Anatomical Pathology Unit

The Anatomical Pathology Unit delivers comprehensive diagnostic services and is organised in six diagnostic sections (Histopathology, Cytopathology, Special Histopathology (ISH, IF, IHC & Autoantibody Serology), the Victorian Neuromuscular Laboratory, Mortuary and Solid Tumour Molecular Pathology.

The Unit supports a broad caseload for Alfred Health and Western Health, operating primarily from The Alfred campus and the New Footscray Hospital.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Practice

  • Deliver high‑quality diagnostic services across all aspects of anatomical pathology, including histopathology, frozen sections and cytopathology.
  • Ensure timely, accurate and clinically relevant reporting.
  • Provide expert consultative advice to clinicians.
  • Participate in on‑call and after‑hours service delivery.

Management, Leadership & Strategy

  • Provide strong leadership, governance and professional direction to the Unit.
  • Manage resources, workforce planning and service delivery to meet budgetary and performance targets.
  • Lead clinical governance, quality, safety and risk management activities.
  • Represent the Unit internally and externally.
  • Support workforce recruitment, retention, performance management and professional development.
  • Drive service development, innovation and the introduction of new technologies aligned with strategic priorities.

Education, Research & Teaching

  • Support and participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs.
  • Provide supervision, training and mentorship to registrars and medical staff.
  • Foster and support clinically relevant research activities.

About You

You are a highly respected senior anatomical pathologist with strong leadership capability, a collaborative approach and a commitment to excellence in patient care.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Fellowship of the RCPA in anatomical pathology
  • Registered or registrable with AHPRA without conditions that impact clinical practice.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated expertise in Anatomical Pathology.
  • Experience in teaching and research within the discipline.
