About the Department

Alfred Health Pharmacy is well recognised for high quality and innovative patient- focused services, education and training programmes as well as significant research output. The service operates over 4 sites within Alfred Health, and continually advocates for postgraduate learning and research interests, with supportive partnerships and expert mentors available to foster staff development.

The department also has a leading Digital Health strategy, playing a pivotal role in managing the electronic medication management system within our comprehensive electronic medical record (Cerner), with an advanced level of integration linking this to the Pharmacy Dispensing (iPharmacy) and Automated Medication Storage systems (Omnicell). This is complemented by a strong clinical presence and a Centre for Medicine Use and Safety program to achieve a considered, safe and financially responsible approach to medication management within Alfred Heath.

About the Team

Our pharmacists are recognised as essential members of all clinical teams, actively engaging in a unit and team-based care model involving ward rounds and collaborating closely with the multidisciplinary team to achieve excellent patient care outcomes. There are vast opportunities to engage in Advanced Scopes of Practice. This includes undertaking credentialing programs and leading clinical activities such as Partnered Pharmacist Medicine Charting, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Nicotine Replacement Therapy, and Analgesia de-escalation, to name a few.

As part of these priorities, the department holds a breadth of clinical stewardship and governance portfolios to ensure high quality and safety standards at all times. The department also has advanced Education programs with Foundation Residency and Advanced Training Residency to support career progression, including opportunities to rotate to external hospitals.

About the Role

The Senior Pharmacist – Melbourne Sexual Health is responsible for the coordination and management of the dispensing and clinical pharmacy services to the Infections Diseases Directorate at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre (MSHC).

Working closely with the Lead Pharmacist – HIV and Infectious Diseases, you will oversee the day-to-day supervision and development of a busy team of Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians at MSHC. Working within the multi-disciplinary team, you will provide innovative pharmacy services to achieve the best medical outcomes for individual patients. You will also contribute to improving medication management on a larger scale through practice-based research and service improvement work.

Key Skills

  • Excellent clinical skills and knowledge with a focus on infectious diseases
  • Good knowledge of dispensary processes and a strong focus on patient care and communication
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership and decision-making skills
  • Problem-solving and risk assessment abilities and the ability to use initiative
  • Excellent communication, time management skills with the ability to prioritise, plan and organise your work and deliver to deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams

Qualifications & Experience required

  • Registered pharmacist in Australia
  • Relevant post-graduate qualification in clinical pharmacy or leadership and management highly desirable
  • Extensive clinical pharmacy experience, with a focus on infectious diseases
  • Experience in HIV and STI management desirable (but not essential)
  • Experience in leading and coaching highly effective team
