Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory, to inpatient and home and community-based services.
The Alfred department of Intensive Care is a state of the art 65-bed unit that cares for over 3500 patients per year. Providing Victorian state services for heart and lung transplantation (including paediatric lung transplantation), short and long-term mechanical circulatory support, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), burns and hyperbaric medicine. The Alfred is one of two centres providing state services for adult trauma, HIV and bone marrow transplantation (autologous and allogeneic). In addition, most other surgical and medical subspecialties are represented in the case-mix, in keeping with its quaternary referral centre status.
This role of ECMO Fellow will enable development of skills in the provision of ECMO for critically ill patients. After appropriate training this will include selection of appropriate patients for ECMO, ECMO cannulation and initiation of support, as well as maintenance of patients on ECMO and other mechanical circulatory support devices. A significant proportion of the role will include involvement in ECMO quality improvement and research. In addition, a major focus of the role will be leading training and ECMO simulation under the supervision of the ECMO Education team.
