The Department

Alfred Care Group’s Physiotherapy Department provides acute physiotherapy services to the patients of The Alfred and Sandringham Hospital and subacute physiotherapy services to Caulfield Hospital.

The acute physiotherapy service is organised into five functional streams, namely: Intensive Care, Musculoskeletal, Respiratory, PAN (Progressive Illness, Aged Care and Neurosciences), and Sandringham. The first four streams are located at The Alfred site, with the fifth and latter stream based at the Sandringham site. The physiotherapy service provides acute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: intensive care, cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, orthopaedics, trauma, burns, lung transplantation, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary rehabilitation, neurology and neurosurgery, infectious diseases, haematology / oncology, general medicine, haemophilia and emergency.

Caulfield Hospital Physiotherapy Department provides an extensive range of inpatient and ambulatory services in the areas of rehabilitation, health of the older person and residential care services. The physiotherapy department has more than 50 staff with another 15 physiotherapists working in other ambulatory and community services on site. The department provides subacute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: ABI, neurology, non-traumatic spinal cord injury, orthopaedics, amputees, burns, pain, Health of Older Person, aged care (GEM), transitional care and aged psychiatry. The subacute physiotherapy service is organised into four functional streams: Neurological Rehabilitation, Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, Health of Older Persons (HOP) and ABI.

The Alfred Care Group Physiotherapy Department has more than 100 EFT and employs over 170 staff. The physiotherapy service has a proud history of clinical and academic excellence. It remains strongly committed to further pursuing excellence in physiotherapy, through clinical research. The Alfred Care Group Physiotherapy Department is a major partner in the Alfred Care Group Physiotherapy Clinical Schools for both La Trobe and Monash Universities and in this role provides core and elective clinical placements for more than 50 undergraduate physiotherapy students.

The Role

The Physiotherapy Clinical Educator plays a vital role in the development and enhancement of the Physiotherapy workforce, fostering a culture of clinical learning and best practice across the continuum of care. This position is responsible for supporting the implementation and periodic review of the Allied Health Strategic Plan, including the clinical education and development of physiotherapy and allied health assistant staff within the department and their students. A major element of the Allied Health Strategic Plan, is to support the further development and implementation of a comprehensive education framework as well as monitor, review and update the existing competency and credentialing program. 

The Physiotherapy Clinical Educator will work closely with clinical teams, stakeholders, and the leadership group to ensure that education efforts align with organisational goals and Allied Health education strategy whilst adhering to best practices and evidence-based approaches. This includes the development and progression of the Alfred Care Group Physiotherapy Clinical Schools alongside affiliated university partners.

The Physiotherapy Clinical Educator is also responsible for and expected to be engaged in quality activities in clinical education and staff development. They have an important role contributing to the development of individuals, the clinical team and the physiotherapy service through good leadership, teamwork and communication.  

The Physiotherapy Clinical Educator will work with and be supervised by the Physiotherapy Clinical Education Lead but also will work closely with the Allied Health Education Unit for education standards, frameworks and alignment, ensuring clinical education meets agreed professional education priorities across Bayside Health.

Work undertaken in this role occurs across the whole Alfred Care Group Physiotherapy Service therefore the educator will be required to work across Alfred Care Group sites. Although this position is primarily a non-clinical role, a small clinical role can be negotiated in exceptional circumstances.

Skills and Qualifications Required

• Registered to practice in the state of Victoria (AHPRA) 
• Demonstrated advanced knowledge and skills in physiotherapy and education.   
• Demonstrated ability to undertake quality initiatives 
• Demonstrated communication skills 
• Demonstrated time management skills
