The Department

Alfred Health’s Multidisciplinary Allied Health Assistant Department provides support to a broad range of allied health professionals across all three sites at Alfred Health: The Alfred Hospital, Caulfield Hospital, and Sandringham Hospital. The department consists of more than 25EFT, and employs a large pool of casual staff. The department continues to develop partnerships with education providers, providing placement opportunities for students undertaking Allied Health Assistant qualifications.  

 

The service at The Alfred Hospital is organised into multiple functional streams that works across our emergency department, acute wards, including our statewide services, outpatients, and home-based services. 

 

Our service at Caulfield Hospital and Sandringham Hospital is organised into different wards, with allied health assistants providing support to an allocated team.

 

The Role

The Allied Health Assistant Student Coordinator works closely with the Allied Health Assistants Manager, Allied Health Assistants Team and Professional Development Lead, and the AHA student supervisors to coordinate and optimise the student placement experience for AHA students.

 

The position is responsible for the following:

  • Liaise with manager, education providers and student supervisors to coordinate upcoming AHA student placements at Alfred Health
  • Support student supervisors in developing student supervision capabilities
  • Develop relevant resources for both students and supervisors
  • Build relationships with existing and new education providers to expand current student placement offerings
  • Evaluate and monitor current student placement program

 

The Allied Health Assistant Student Coordinator is expected to lead and actively contribute to an assigned department portfolio. The Allied Health Assistant Student Coordinator is also expected to undertake regular supervision with an assigned supervisor and are expected to supervise grade 2 AHAs when required.

 

The position may involve working across any of the Alfred Health sites.

 

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • A minimum of 3 years clinical experience as Grade 3 AHA. 
  • Previous experience working within a health-related field and/or acute, physical/rehabilitation or aged care facility. 
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise/mentor AHA Grade 2 staff, AHA students and/or work experience students. 
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, educational theories and best practice. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously (within scope of practice) and to be resourceful and take initiative and decision-making responsibility. 
  • Sound interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to work well within a team environment and relate to medical, nursing and allied health staff, patients and families. 
  • Exceptional knowledge and understanding of AHA scope of practice and delegation and supervision principles.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of continuous quality improvement principles. 
  • Sound understanding of professional codes of conduct and ethical practice. 
  • Advanced computer skills. 

 

Desirable                    

  • Completion of a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or equivalent. 
  • Information technology and database management skills including the development of e-learning strategies.
