Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services. On 1 January 2026, Alfred Health will come together with Kooweerup Regional Health Service, Peninsula Health, Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to create Bayside Health, a newly merged health service with more than 22,000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. The new health service will provide people with the best possible care with services that support them throughout their lives. The merger will also strengthen our workforce, providing new training, education and career opportunities. Subject to final approval on 1 January 2026, all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.

About the team
AMAH provides specialist psychiatric clinical care to people with severe mental illness. The Program has a primary responsibility for residents of inner South-eastern metropolitan Melbourne but cares for all patients seeking its services.
The Alfred Mental and Addiction Health Program (AMAH) comprises:
- AMAH Hospital and Emergency Services (HES)
- AMAH Adult and Older Adult Services (AOAS)
- AMAH Infant, Child & Youth Services including Headspace (HI-CYMHS)
- AMAH State-wide Services
About the role
The HDU Lead will be a core staff member of the leadership team and the multidisciplinary team. The HDU Lead will be responsible for working collaboratively with the ANUM to provide leadership, coordination and support to nursing staff on their allocated shifts. The role requires the allocation of workload, clinical support to nursing staff, leadership to resolve any concerns or incidents that may arise, communication with key internal and external stakeholder, consumer, families and carers and ensuring a safe environment is maintained.
The HDU Lead is a professional and clinical role model for all staff in setting clinical standards and achieving high quality evidence-based nursing care. The HDU Lead will demonstrate advanced clinical knowledge and skills to foster an environment, which embodies critical thinking, reflection and professional development to support processes, policy and practice that promotes the recovery principles.
About you
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent or bachelor's degree in nursing
- Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Division 1 Registered Nurse
- At least two years post qualifying experience working in a mental health setting, preferably an acute setting
- Be familiar with and adhere to relevant professional codes of ethics, the values of Alfred Health, and relevant legislation, particularly the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act (2022) and the Guardianship & Administration Act (1986).
Desirable
- Previous leadership experience in a clinical setting
- Post-Graduate Degree in mental health nursing or equivalent (or working towards)
- Attended or planned attendance at HDU Advanced Practice Workshop
