Victorian Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) Statewide Pharmacy Service
Established under the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2017, this service ensures safe and compassionate access to VAD medications. The Statewide Pharmacy Service, located at Alfred Health, supports patients across Victoria—including regional areas—sometimes requiring overnight travel.
Key Functions
- Compound and dispense VAD medications per legislative requirements
- Pack medications with instructions into prescribed locked boxes
- Educate patients, carers, and healthcare providers
- Collaborate with VAD Coordinators and Care Navigators
- Handle the return and disposal of unused medications
- Report to the Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board
In 2024 alone, the team visited over 500 patients and continues to grow.
The Role
Part-Time Pharmacist (0.6 EFT – 3 days/week, until June 2027)
You will:
- Advise and educate medical practitioners about VAD prescribing
- Dispense and provide education on VAD medications
- Visit and support patients and healthcare teams across Victoria
- Deliver tailored care with compassion and professionalism

Qualifications & Experience required
Essential
- Registered as a Registered Pharmacist with the Pharmacy Board of Australia via AHPRA
Desirable
- Relevant clinical post-graduate qualification such as Masters in Clinical Pharmacy Practice or equivalent
- Experience in the provision of clinical pharmacy services in a hospital or outpatient setting
- Experience in ambulatory care or delivering clinical pharmacy services in the home environment, including Home Medication Reviews
- Experience in providing cognitive services to patients as they approach the end of life
- Experience in providing clinical services to patients receiving palliative care
- Extensive hospital pharmacy experience with a demonstrated understanding of contemporary practice in hospital clinical pharmacy services, QuM and therapeutics
