The Department

Alfred Mental and Addiction Health is the Area Mental Health Service responsible for the operation of services which focus on people with a severe mental illness residing in the Inner South Eastern area of Melbourne.

Services are provided by a number of teams located at the Alfred Hospital (Commercial Road, Prahran) and at St Kilda Road Clinic in St. Kilda, Alma Road Continuing Care Unit in St. Kilda, the Child & Adolescent Service currently located in Moorabbin and Aged Psychiatry based at Caulfield Hospital.

The Role

The Access and Consultation team sits within the Navigations Service and has clinical oversight provided by a consultant psychiatrist. The Access and Consultation Senior Clinician will join a team of 3 other Senior Clinicians who work together to provide the community program with a single point of entry for person between the age of 25 – 65.  In addition to assessing referrals this team will assist with short-term support, consultations and liaison with the community. This team will be responsible for providing face to face one off assessments as well as secondary consultation and education to primary health providers.  The team will assist with internal referrals and the movement of clients throughout the community program.

The Access and Consultation team is based at St Kilda Road Clinic. These positions require significant post registration experience with a demonstrated ability in community-based assessment and the management of psychiatrically disabled people. Relevant knowledge and demonstrated skills in mental state and risk assessment and knowledge of community psychiatric nursing principles and practice is essential to undertake this role. In addition to this skill related to short-term support, family therapy and single session therapies are required. 

Qualifications and Experience required

  • Registered Psychiatric Nurse or Registered Nurse with a current Victorian practicing certificate Or eligibility for membership of Australian Association of Social Workers. Or Current Registered Occupational Therapy through Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority (AHPRA).
  • Current Victorian Driver’s License is essential
