The Department
Alfred Health Support Services provides non-clinical support services across Alfred Health, these services include cleaning services, car parking and fleet management, waste management, gardens and grounds, distribution, security and access control, ward support, linen services, ancillary services, food services and hospitality.
The Role
We are seeking an accomplished Senior Cleaning Operations Leader to provide strategic and operational leadership across our Support Services function. Reporting to the Cleaning Manager, you will play a critical role in setting direction, driving performance, and ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality, compliant cleaning services across the organisation.
This role extends beyond day-to-day supervision and focuses on workforce leadership, operational excellence, risk management, and continuous improvement. You will lead, mentor, and develop cleaning leaders and frontline teams, ensuring standards not only meet but exceed industry best practice and the Department of Health Cleaning Standards for Public Hospitals.
As a senior leader, you will partner closely with Support Services Coordinators and other stakeholders to build a high-performing, safe, multi-skilled workforce. You will contribute to strategic planning, performance reporting, and the implementation of initiatives that improve efficiency, quality, and staff engagement.
This position is ideal for a proven leader with extensive cleaning or facilities services experience (typically 5+ years at a leadership level) who is ready to operate with greater autonomy and influence, and to contribute meaningfully to organisational outcomes and patient safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for cleaning services, overseeing daily operations while ensuring alignment with organisational objectives and clinical safety priorities.
- Partner with the Cleaning Manager to plan, coordinate, and optimise workforce deployment, ensuring service continuity, efficiency, and high performance across all shifts and locations.
- Lead the training, mentoring, and professional development of cleaning leaders and frontline teams, building capability, succession, and a strong culture of accountability and excellence.
- Drive a high-performing, multi-skilled workforce, setting clear expectations for hygiene, safety, and service quality in complex healthcare environments.
- Ensure full compliance with Department of Health Cleaning Standards, accreditation requirements, and internal policies, proactively identifying and mitigating risk.
- Work collaboratively with Support Services Coordinators and key stakeholders to promote a safe, engaged, and socially responsible workplace, supporting staff wellbeing and retention.
- Establish robust quality assurance and auditing processes, analysing performance data and leading continuous improvement initiatives to enhance outcomes and efficiency.
- Provide oversight of inventory, consumables, and equipment management, ensuring assets are maintained, fit for purpose, and cost-effective.
Experience and Qualifications required
Essential
- Minimum 5 years’ senior experience in hospital or large-scale healthcare cleaning operations, with demonstrated responsibility for operational leadership, workforce management, and service delivery outcomes.
- Comprehensive knowledge of healthcare cleaning standards, infection prevention and control principles, and relevant regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Proven capability to lead, motivate, and develop large, diverse teams, including experience mentoring supervisors or team leaders and building leadership capability.
- Strong operational, organisational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in complex, high-risk environments.
- Highly developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills, enabling effective collaboration with clinical teams, support services, and senior management.
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety, quality assurance, continuous improvement, and social responsibility.
- Clear aspiration and readiness to operate in a senior management capacity, with the ability to contribute to strategic planning, decision-making, and organisational performance.
