The Department – Alfred Cancer Program

The Alfred Cancer Program is responsible for the overall delivery of a comprehensive cancer service which involves a number of clinical areas and units including Medical Oncology, Clinical Haematology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Apheresis, State-wide Haemophilia Service, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care and the Victorian Melanoma Service. Alfred Health delivers a comprehensive suite of services which involves a range of diagnostic services, surgical, radiation and oncology therapies and the recently introduced Integrative Oncology Unit and Wellness Centre for cancer patients.

Alfred Health invites applications for the role of Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) within our recently established Integrative Oncology and Wellness Centre, located in the stunning, purpose-built Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre. This state-of-the-art facility offers a light-filled, healing environment that enhances the experience of both patients and staff through its natural timber finishes and thoughtfully designed spaces.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a dynamic, experienced and compassionate nurse to take on a pivotal role in shaping and delivering integrative supportive care to cancer patients in an outpatient setting. The CNS will be at the forefront of implementing our integrative oncology model of care within Alfred Cancer, contributing to a new era in person-centred cancer care.

About the Role

As the Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will be the key clinician at the entry point of this outpatient service. You will work closely with patients to identify their supportive care needs and coordinate appropriate interventions and referrals to allied health and integrative services within the unit. You will also provide expert clinical care, education and advice to patients as well as leadership to the multidisciplinary team.

The CNS will work collaboratively to embed evidence-based, holistic care practices within the integrative oncology model of care, while supporting continuous quality improvement and professional development across the service.  

The role is offered as a fixed term 2-year contract with likelihood of the role becoming permanent.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care in collaboration with patients and the broader multidisciplinary team.
  • Identify and respond to supportive care needs, providing expert triage, information and coordination of services.
  • Act as a mentor and clinical resource to nursing, allied health staff and complementary practitioners.
  • Contribute to quality improvement and research activities that advance integrative oncology practice.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and lead education activities within the Wellness Centre team.
  • Champion a high standard of professional behaviour, clinical practice and patient-centred care.

About You

We are seeking a capable, enthusiastic and compassionate professional who is passionate about improving the wellbeing of people affected by cancer. You will be a collaborative team player with strong clinical decision-making skills and a commitment to innovation, excellence and continuous learning.

To be considered for this role, you must:

  • Hold a post-basic qualification relevant to the area of oncology or supportive care and have at least 12 months’ experience in that clinical area,or have a minimum of 4 years’ post-registration experience including 3 years in a relevant specialty.
  • Demonstrate advanced clinical skills, with a particular focus on holistic and supportive care.
  • Be recognised as a positive role model who actively contributes to team development and mentorship.
  • Have experience supporting or leading quality improvement and research initiatives.
  • Maintain current membership of a relevant professional body and demonstrate ongoing commitment to professional learning and development.
