The Department

Clinical Haematology
A multidisciplinary department specialising in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of a range of diseases and disorders related to the blood.  Treatment is underpinned by ongoing research led by clinical investigators in the department, often in conjunction with the Australian Centre for Blood Disorders (ACBD) which is co-located with the department on The Alfred Hospital site.  Clinical research is largely focused on developing new treatment regimens for patients with Multiple Myeloma and Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. 


The Role

The position is located on The Alfred campus in Melbourne and provides biostatistical leadership for consulting and collaborative support for clinical trials and correlative research projects led by investigators in the Department of Clinical Haematology.  The Expert Biostatistician will lead the statistical aspects of the planning of trials, including development of concepts, preparation of grant proposals and the development of clinical trial protocols. A key aspect of the role is the performance of sample size calculations for innovative clinical trial designs, the latter requiring simulation of the proposed trial. The incumbent will also write or review Statistical Analysis Plans for ongoing trials and provide ongoing advice on statistical issues related to the management of the trials. Statistical analysis and reporting of results from trials, correlative research projects and exploratory studies is another key aspect of the role as is the need to find and implement novel approaches for the analysis of data from exploratory studies.


Qualifications and Experience


  • PhD in Statistics, Mathematical Statistics or Biostatistics plus demonstrated experience as a clinical trials biostatistician, or, PhD in another quantitative field plus demonstrated experience as a clinical trials biostatistician in oncology.
  • Experience in the design of clinical trials.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborative research in the medical or health sciences.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with statistical programming in R, Bayesian analyses with R libraries or in WinBugs, survival analyses in R, SAS or Stata, generalized linear mixed models analyses in R, SAS or Stata.
  • Familiarity with statistical aspects of clinical trials
  • Familiarity with the Bayesian paradigm for decision-making



  • Familiarity with machine learning
  • A track record as a named investigator on successful grant applications to government funding agencies (e.g. NHMRC, MRFF) or experience in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Familiarity with estimands in cancer trials
  • Experience liaising with, or serving on, Data Safety and Monitoring Boards
  • Familiarity with EDC systems (e.g. REDCap)
