On 1 January 2026, Alfred Health will come together with Kooweerup Regional Health Service, Peninsula Health, Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to create Bayside Health, a newly merged health service with more than 22,000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. The new health service will provide people with the best possible care with services that support them throughout their lives. The merger will also strengthen our workforce, providing new training, education and career opportunities. Subject to final approval on 1 January 2026, all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.

The role

Applications are invited for the position of Specialist in Intensive Care Medicine. This is an opportunity to join one of Australia’s leading intensive care institutions, recognised nationally and internationally for excellence in patient care, innovation, education, and clinical research.

The Alfred Hospital Department of Intensive Care is a state of the art, university affiliated, 68 bed unit treating over 3500 patients per year. The Alfred provides Victorian state services for heart and lung transplantation  (including paediatric lung transplantation), artificial heart technology, adult burns, hyperbaric medicine and HIV services. The Alfred Hospital is the comprehensive centre within the Victorian ECMO Service (VECMOS). The Alfred also provides Victoria's adult cystic fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension services. The Alfred is one of two centres providing state services for adult trauma and bone marrow transplantation and CAR-T therapy. In addition, most other surgical and medical subspecialties are represented in the case-mix, keeping in line with the quaternary referral centre status of The Alfred Hospital.

Applications are open for Specialist in Intensive Care Medicine for more than one position. Appointments may be offered as permanent or fixed term and can be negotiated as full time or fractional depending on service operation needs and candidate preference. Qualifications and Experience:

• Appointees must be legally qualified medical practitioners, registered or registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) without conditions, undertakings or reprimands that could impact on their clinical practice
• Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM)
• Demonstrable relevant knowledge and experience in Intensive Care Medicine
• Meets Alfred Health requirements for credentialing and scope of practice in Intensive Care Medicine
• Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative approach to patient care
• Experience in teaching and an involvement in research are desirable
