Alfred Health

Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory, to inpatient and home and community-based services.

The Alfred Hospital Intensive Care Unit is a state of the art 65 bed unit that treats over 3000 patients per year. The Alfred ICU provides Victorian state services for heart and lung transplantation, advanced heart failure and mechanical circulatory support including extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and impella, burns and hyperbaric medicine. The Alfred is one of two centres providing state services for trauma, HIV and bone marrow transplantation. In addition to the state services above The Alfred Hospital is a quaternary referral centre for a wide range of complex medical and surgical subspecialties.

The ICU runs an intensivist-led, in-house echocardiography service which consists of 11 ICU FCICM consultants with advanced echo qualifications (primarily DDU), a cardiac sonographer and an echocardiography fellow. The service performs over 1200 studies per year, including both transthoracic & transoesophageal imaging, agitated saline and microbubble contrast enhanced ultrasound, mechanical circulatory support weaning studies, and vascular and lung ultrasound.

The echocardiography service holds weekly QA and education meetings, and has close links with the cardiology and cardiac anaesthesia departments at the Alfred. Echocardiography consultants and fellows are instructors on the basic and advanced Alfred echocardiography courses held each year. There is a comprehensive basic echocardiography education program for the ICU registrars which is led by the echocardiography fellow and run weekly.

The echocardiography fellow participates in audits, case review and consultant meetings. The position is primarily an imaging fellowship; however, there is a small clinical component to enable trainees to maintain their clinical skills. The fellow generally will complete a formal qualification such the DDU (Critical Care) during the 12-month appointment; supervision for other qualifications such as EDEC is also available. A basic level of scanning is a prerequisite for selection and fellows have typically completed a basic course and performed at least 30 FCU studies prior to commencing.

The position is for a 12-month duration and commences in February 2026.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to prepare a 5 minute presentation as part of their interview.
