The Department
The Monash University School of Translational Medicine (STM) is the FMNS’s leading clinical school for biomedical research and education, offering undergraduate and postgraduate study programs. STM, along with the School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine (SPHPM) form the Sub-Faculty of Translational Medicine and Public Health led by Foundation Dean, Professor Stephen Jane.

The Role

The Research Assistant provides a variety of high-quality research services to support the operations of the Brain Recovery and Rehabilitation Group in the Department of Neuroscience. They perform a range of research activities aligned to funded projects, including ‘EXIST-Rehab’ which aims to develop and implement exercise programs for people with moderate to severe stroke.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for working with the Group’s researchers to coordinate research activities, including drafting ethics applications, recruitment of participants, organising (planning and scheduling) and conducting qualitative interviews or focus groups, qualitative data analysis, and preparing reports. They will also be expected to contribute to other research assistance tasks, including but not limited to systematic review screening, meta-analyses, and data entry while ensuring a compliant and safe research environment. The Research Assistant is expected to work with an increasing degree of autonomy as skills and experience develop and focus group/report writing formats are established.

Education/Qualifications

  1. The appointee will have:
    • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field
    • It is not necessary to be AHPRA registered; this role is as a research assistant (and not clinician).

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Sound analytical, technical and data analysis skills and a demonstrated capacity to apply rehabilitation research methods, processes and systems
  2. Strong organisational skills, including the ability to set priorities, manage time and plan work to meet deadlines
  3. Demonstrated project administration skills with the ability to support research projects accordance with agreed standards and timeframes
  4. Ability to work as an effective member of a team as well as independently under general supervision
  5. Strong attention to detail and accuracy and an understanding of confidentiality, privacy and information handling principles
  6. Well-developed communication skills, including the ability to draft a range of documentation
  7. A high level of computer literacy, including demonstrated experience in learning and adopting new software packages as required
  8. Demonstrated experience in recruitment of people for trials, with experience in speaking with adults after brain injury or stroke preferred
  9. Demonstrated strong work ethics and commitment to team work
