YMCA Howmans Gap Alpine Discovery Centre, located in the Falls Creek region, is seeking a passionate lead cook to join the dynamic catering team in the High Plains of Victoria.

About the Camp

Howmans Gap Alpine Discovery Camp is an alpine centre and adventure camp located by Falls Creek, and managed by YMCA Camps. Catering to schools and groups year-round, the team at Howmans Gap run a variety of programs and activities to suit every group, from skiing and tobogganing in winter, to orienteering and mountain biking in summer. Featuring state-of-the-art accessible accommodation, cosy cottages, and full catering options, Howmans Gap Alpine Discovery Centre is the perfect place to explore the great outdoors, come snow or sunshine.

About the Role

As Lead Cook, you will work as a leader within the catering team to ensure all campers receive delicious meals during their stay, and that kitchen assistants are well supported and guided through their day-to-day duties. You will be responsible for:

  • Preparing and providing food for campers, including the coordination of special diets
  • Assisting in the training, coordination and supervision of kitchen assistants and other employees
  • Applying best practice as outlined in the camp’s food safety program
  • Undertake general cooking duties, including baking and pastry cooking
  • Food ordering and stock control
  • Upholding the values of the YMCA at all times

This is a casual position with an hourly rate of $34.07 + Super.

About You

You are a skilled chef with strong interpersonal and leadership skills, which will allow you to build strong and positive relationships with campers, colleagues and other stakeholders. You have previous experience in the hospitality and/or catering industry, particularly in and around staff supervision and/or food purchasing. You will be well-organised, committed to excellent customer service and have the ability to apply best practice as outlined in the camp’s Food Safety Plan and to ensure compliance with local government requirements and YMCA policies and procedures.
