About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Protection and Secondary Design Engineer to join our engineering team, focusing on the design and configuration of protection systems within the distribution network.

This newly created role supports growing demand in protection design across distribution and substations projects. Based in Glen Waverley, you’ll be responsible for delivering protection and control designs, including fuse reach studies, ACR settings, and secondary systems for new substations and associated assets.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and review protection and secondary designs for distribution networks, including fusing schemes and Auto Circuit Recloser (ACR) protection settings.
  • Prepare schematics, wiring diagrams, and logic drawings for protection and control systems as required.
  • Configure and validate protection relay settings for various distribution applications
  • Conduct fault studies, coordination analysis, and grading reports
  • Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, regulatory requirements, and internal design guidelines
  • Producing design documentation for zone substation projects
  • Supporting engineering design and commissioning activities
  • Auditing internal and subcontractor designs
  • Investigating protection anomalies and proposing solutions
  • Assisting with scopes, estimates, and specifications
  • Contributing to team development and capability building

About You

You’re a qualified electrical engineer with a strong technical foundation and a detail-oriented approach. You’re ready to grow in a specialist function and contribute to building in-house capability.

You’ll have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 3–4 years’ experience in distribution protection settings or secondary design
  • Strong understanding of distribution network protection principles, including fusing, ACRs, and relay coordination.
  • Hands-on experience with switches, ACRs, and substation protection settings
  • Knowledge of SCADA or secondary systems (advantageous)
  • Proficiency in using design tools such as PowerFactory, ETAP, NEPLAN, or similar.
  • Familiarity with AS/NZS standards, utility design practices, and SCADA/RTU integration.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Strong understanding of protection principles and commissioning processes
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively
