Associate Nurse Unit Manager

We are currently seeking an experienced and dynamic Associate Nurse Unit Manager (ANUM) to join our team and contribute to the delivery of exceptional healthcare services.

As the Associate Nurse Unit Manager (ANUM), you will play a key role in supporting the Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) in the efficient operation of the nursing unit. You will be responsible for coordinating patient care activities, supervising nursing staff, and ensuring the delivery of patient-centered care. The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership skills, clinical expertise, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of nursing practice.

Working in Karana, you will utilise a person-centred care approach to the provision of the physical and emotional needs of residents/clients. You will participate in their total care and orientate to their individual needs to enable them to live a meaningful life and maintain their self-respect.

All clinical staff work all shifts across the 24 hour day and at 7 days of the week, inclusive of public holidays.

Classification will be based on qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Professional Practice:

  • Practice in accordance with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse
  • Works collaboratively with the Nurse Unit Manager and the multidisciplinary team to facilitate and foster the provision of best practice standards of nursing care and service delivery that meets the needs of the Patient / Residents, their families and carers.
  • Demonstrates expert knowledge and clinical skills and a strong management focus in the clinical unit/department/area of responsibility.
  • Is accountable and responsible for clinical coordination and resource management of unit/department/area of responsibility on a shift to shift basis.
  • Deputises for the Nurse Unit Manager of the designated clinical unit/department and as such, must have a working knowledge of the administrative operations of the area.
  • Demonstrate commitment to person-centred care and best practice standards
  • Provide for the physical and emotional needs of residents, patients, clients by assisting with the activities of daily living and encouraging appropriate self-care;
  • Ensure the delivery of a high standard of evidence-based nursing care to consumers
  • Demonstrate and maintain competency in the performance of clinical skills
  • Maintain current knowledge of clinical practice
  • Actively participate in identifying where improvements can be made to the quality of consumer care
  • Participate in clinical audits, process redesign and accreditation against healthcare standards to ensure ongoing clinical practice improvement and the quality of consumer care.
  • Is a clinical leader and resource to the nursing team assisting with problem solving and the delivery of best practice evidence based person-centred care.

Clinical/Management of Care:

  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with established protocols and residents personalised care plans;
  • Monitor residents' vital signs, symptoms, and responses to medical interventions;
  • Promptly report vital consumer observations that are outside the normal range as per clinical guidelines;
  • Provides nursing care of individuals and groups within the Registered Nurse scope of practice;
  • Completes comprehensive and accurate nursing assessments of patients/residents;
  • Deviations or changes in a patients’ normal condition, including vital observations which may indicate deterioration, are acted upon appropriately and promptly;
  • A plan of care is developed and documented in consultation with the patient/resident and; relevant others and identifies expected outcomes, including a timeframe

Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate and current medical records ensuring documentation meets professional and legal standards
  • Record observations and report any changes in patient condition to the healthcare team.
  • Recording any incidents that may occur to all residents
  • Maintaining high levels of confidentiality in align with Yarrawonga Health policies and national legislations.

Collaboration:

  • Develop ability to assume the role of the Nurse Unit Manager as required.
  • Supports the Nurse Unit Manager in Residential Services with compliance to the Aged Care Standards and business outcomes.
  • Supports the Nurse Unit Manager to implement the quality, safety and risk management program for the clinical unit/department.
  • Continuing to provide strong leadership in an after hours environment

Communication:

  • Establish and maintain effective communication with all other health professionals and support staff, consumers, families, the community and external care providers
  • Relay important information to the supervising healthcare professional.

Infection Control:

  • Adhere to infection control protocols to prevent the spread of infections within the healthcare facility.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary environment.

Safety:

  • Follow safety protocols to ensure the well-being of both patients and staff.
  • Identify and report any safety hazards in the healthcare facility

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong leadership abilities;
  • Compassion and empathy;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Ability to work well in a team;
  • Physical stamina and the ability to perform tasks that may require lifting and manual dexterity;
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow protocols and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Current Nursing Registration with Australian Health Practitioners Agency (AHPRA)

Key Selection Criteria:

Essential:

  • Minimum 3 years' experience as a Registered Nurse;
  • Current Advanced Life Support (ALS) certificate;
  • First Line Emergency Care (FLEC) Course completed;
  • Desirable to have or working towards managerial qualifications i.e. short courses or graduate certificate;
  • Demonstrated leadership ability with a clear understanding of the managerial responsibilities of an Associate Nurse Unit Manager;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and consultatively as part of a multidisciplinary team;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with all major stakeholders both internal and external;
  • Ability to problem solve and make decisions in a variety of complex situations;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional standards of practice, legal and ethical requirements and industrial relations;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of organisational change management principles and ability to support staff through the change management process;
  • Demonstrated ability to use Information Communications Technology;
  • Ability to identify opportunities for quality improvement and process redesign and to support/coach staff in the implementation of these activities;
  • Demonstrated Knowledge and understanding of Aged Care Accreditation and Funding Systems.

Desirable:

  • Associate Nurse Unit Manager experience within an Aged Care facility.
  • Demonstrated team and Leadership Training
  • Experience in Palliative Care.
  • Relevant experience at Person Centred Care and problem-solving skills at an advance level.
