WSP’s Transmission & Electrification team is helping a diverse range of clients tackle the energy transition with a Future Ready approach. Our team assists clients from a broad range of sectors, including Transmission & Distribution, Generation, Renewables, Transportation, Property & Buildings, Defence, Water, and Mining. The role of Senior/Associate Secondary Design Engineer in the team provides key electrical engineering input to these projects as well as coaching and mentoring junior staff.
This role can be based anywhere in Australia, with teams already based in NSW, VIC, QLD, and SA.
What You’ll Do
In this dynamic role, you'll report to our Engineering Manager in the Transmission & Electrification team, supporting projects nationally by:
- Leading the development of HV (Secondary) design for transmission & distribution projects.
- Developing and reviewing technical documentation such as design reports, equipment specifications, cable schedules, and interface documents.
- Utilizing a working knowledge of primary substation elements, transmission lines, underground cables, and power system earthing design.
- Supporting the high voltage scope for Owner’s Engineer and Technical Due Diligence projects.
- Undertaking reviews of designs and reports.
- Checking and verifying design work undertaken by other team members.
- Coaching and mentoring junior staff in electrical engineering or project delivery.
- Providing leadership in Safety-in-Design (SID) and fulfilling legislative requirements in SID.
- Leading design projects and coordinating with various disciplines including Primary, SCADA, Power systems, structural, and drafting.
- Undertaking short-term site visits according to business needs.
- Preparing proposals and contributing to business development for the team.
About You
This role is strategically important to our future growth and impact. We are looking for a Senior or Associate Engineer who can provide robust technical input to projects based on experience and a strong understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals. Your key skills will include:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Typically, 8-14+ years’ post-graduate experience ideally in a consultancy environment.
- Existing RPEQ/RPEV or the ability to attain it is required.
- Experience in EHV and HV electrical engineering from conceptual to detailed design in substations, cable systems, transmission & distribution utilities, or renewable energy projects.
- Proven experience in secondary design, including protection, control, AC/DC systems, SCADA, and related studies.
- Experience in or working knowledge of IEC61850 implementation is highly advantageous.
- Experience in client-facing roles, with the ability to provide robust advice and support design projects through clear communication of project status, issues, and risks.
- Proficient in proposal and report writing.
- Familiarity with testing and commissioning support activities.
