As we continue to strengthen our trenchless design and underground construction capability across Australia and New Zealand, we are seeking a Senior Associate to Principal Structural Engineer to help deliver solutions across some of the region’s most significant water infrastructure and asset rehabilitation programs.
From deep, restricted footprint shafts more than 20 metres below busy urban environments to construction sequencing and public realm structures – this is an opportunity to influence the way critical infrastructure is designed, built and delivered.

The Opportunity
Based in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne and working flexibly with up to 2–3 days per week from home, you will take on a project and design leadership role across WSP’s multidisciplinary project portfolio.
About You
You provide expert consultancy and detailed design engineering services and thrives on tackling complex challenges. You enjoy leading teams in optioneering, design development, liaising with clients and various stakeholders to identify key drivers and strategic requirements to achieve project success. You are well adept at offering technical guidance to ensure projects are completed successfully and helping to secure new opportunities. Collaboration with multidisciplinary design teams, other technical experts, as well as commercial and project management teams will be key as you work to expand WSP’s presence across our diverse engineering services panel.
What You’ll Do
Underground structures and asset rehabilitation
- Deliver complex shoring and shaft designs for proposed works in constrained CBD or brownfield environments, including shafts exceeding 20 m depth
- Specialist engineering assessment, investigation, condition assessment, structural appraisal and rehabilitation of existing intact pipelines due to implementation of proposed underground structures and construction loading.
- Work closely with clients and contractors to simplify complex engineering into practical, executable solutions.
- Provide enabling and temporary works for complex underground installations.
· Familiarity with large sewer relining and rehabilitation would be advantageous.
Technical leadership
- Complete technical reviews, design governance, and technical workshops.
- Mentor and coach emerging engineers, fostering technical excellence across the team.
- Champion innovation across both trenchless and temporary works practices
- Familiarity with industry structural analysis software and creating closed form solutions
Commercial leadership
- Drive new growth opportunities, by maintaining client relationships
- Identify new target markets and grow opportunities around your key skillset and the work you enjoy doing
- Shape tender strategies, staging, and constructability assessments for major projects.
Key requirements
- Bachelor’s in Civil/Structural Engineering
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or equivalent
- At least 15 years’ experience in underground structures, water and wastewater civil engineering
- Proven track record of technical leadership and coordinating multiple engineering or adjacent disciplines across geographic locations for successful delivery of underground structures and asset rehabilitation projects
- Strong background in water industry consultancy, Civil Design and Project delivery
- Comprehensive knowledge of safety in design and Australian water industry standards.
- Familiarity with large sewer relining and rehabilitation would be advantageous.
