The Opportunity

You’ll lead the coordination of multidisciplinary design activities throughout the construction phase, ensuring seamless integration across all project elements. You’ll also oversee the production of high‑quality technical drawings and plans that bring structures to life, supporting project teams to deliver safe, efficient and future‑focused outcomes.

Key accountabilities (but not limited to):

  • Comply with all role specific SHEQ obligations as detailed in the relevant RACI matrix.
  • Lead and foster a good safety culture to ensure the safety and well-being of staff, including taking a lead role on implementing and improving Safety in Design processes.
  • Partner with Industry Leads and client facing representatives across WSP to ensure full implementation of market and client strategies, creating high levels of client service and opportunity. In particular, contribute to the creation and implementation of the Client Relationship Management (CRM) plan for clients in the region, to maximise our work opportunities.
  • Support and drive the development activities in partnership with Senior Project and Technical Managers to ensure the project teams' skills acquisition (via potential recruitment) and development (via training and on the job mentoring) is maintained to meet market driven growth objectives and related capability requirements is sustainable, with a focus on continuous improvement of appropriate Design Management, technical delivery and risk management procedures.
  •  Lead and set development activities of staff to help them realise their potential, and the success of our people and business.
  • Demonstrate leadership by systemising Project Controls, Contracts Administration, Construction Management and Cost Planning into Projects systems and processes.
  • Accountable for business and project delivery via Design Manager roles as required to lead the delivery of high quality design delivery on major road and other transport projects based on scale and complexity of project.
  • Take Pursuit and/or Proposal Manager roles as required on proposals to lead and influence the success to internal and external clients based on scale and complexity of project.
  • Embed risk management principles & methodologies into Project systems and processes.

Experience, skills and organisational knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Appropriate Qualified Experience. 
  • Principal Design Manager Professional Development. OHS&E Training (Level 1, 2 and Safety Leadership). Management Training.
  • Typically, 20+ years’ experience. Typically, 5+ years construction related experience.
  • Extremely technically competent across a broad range of disciplines on a range of high profile projects.
  • Delivered large multi-discipline projects on-time, quality and budget (approx teams of 60+) with design gross fees typically $10m+.
  • Established and managed complex design processes and systems in high profile projects.
  • Strong understanding of construction processes to ensure clear alignment with design process.
  • Extensive experience in design risk management procedures and practices for major infrastructure projects.
  • Strong experience in the management and delivery of successful technical aspects of major infrastructure design projects.
  • Extensive experienced in owning and being responsible for signing off on design. Delivered designs that meet legal requirements, quality standards and client outcomes on major infrastructure projects.
  • Managed and built client extensive interfaces between multi discipline project teams to ensure strong communications on all project aspects including cost, quality, progress and delivery of agreed outcomes.
  • Strong experience in working in partnership with other design organisations in Alliance or JV. Skilled in managing conflicts between organisational cultures and business systems demands.
  • Strong understanding of IT requirements for project delivery. Experienced in working with EDMS. Established systems to meet complex checking and verification requirements.
