The Opportunity

The Design Manager has the primary responsibility for coordinating all the design work and outputs for a project. 

The Design Manager is responsible for managing the development of technical documentation, drawings and plans for the project. Design Managers bring together architects, structural and services engineers, along with specialist designers and BIM technicians to create coordinated designs which are used during the build and aid maintenance of the structure/s once complete. 

As a Design Manager, you will be responsible for looking after teams of designers to ensure project documentation is produced on time to the appropriate level of detail and technical completeness for the design milestone. 

What you will do

This is a challenging role that will see you lead the delivery of best-practice consulting services to Defence clients throughout Australia and collaborate with other discipline leaders to deliver multi-disciplinary projects in the Defence sector.

You will be part of our accomplished Property & Buildings section and will work alongside our established team of Engineering technical experts, assisting in bidding and delivering successful projects. Your role will also be well supported across our business, with skilled resources in other sections. 

  • Overall design responsibility on medium/large scale Defence Projects. 
  • Deliver best practice consulting services to clients, focusing on Defence projects across Australia.
  • Client relationship management including managing key Defence infrastructure contractor client relationships and the development of relationships with new clients.
  • Support for proposal submission / preparation in the pursuit of Defence sector opportunities.
  • Leadership of project teams and project management including budgetary and quality control for consulting assignments.
  • Leverage the strength and depth of the team across Australia to deliver efficient, practical and innovative solutions to clients in the Defence sector.
  • Liaising with technical specialists from other disciplines or offices, building relationships with key internal stakeholders working in Defence both geographically and across various services lines.
  • Mentoring and coaching staff with respect to their career growth and professional development.
  • Participation in the national and global communities within projects and Defence industry groups.

 

About you

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant Engineering discipline. 
  • 10+ years of relevant project/design management experience with a focus on Defence and / or major redevelopment projects. 
  • Highly competent in managing risk on projects including contractual and commercial risks. 
  • Established processes for identifying, managing and monitoring risks to project outcomes in particular safety management and design. 
  • Collaborative approach and ability to lead & build teams and rapport amongst clients, colleagues and other industry leaders.
  • Knowledge and understanding of all engineering disciplines. 
  • Experience in coordination of engineering services and architectural design. 
  • Experience in resourcing and managing a wide range of professional disciplines and subcontractors in a project. 
  • Expertise in managing medium to large size project budgets and using financial tools successfully. 
  • Experience in creating a project culture aligned to our values yet distinct to individual projects and project outcomes. 
  • Chartered Engineer (preferred), or willing to achieve status with WSP’s support.
