Wesfarmers OneDigital is building Australia's leading data and digital retail ecosystem, underpinned by AI across everything we do. We operate across four pillars - loyalty, data, retail media and AI, turning millions of customer interactions into insights that shape how Australians shop, live and connect.

We're expanding one of our most innovative teams and are looking for exceptional talent to join the AI Build Squad to help our divisions make the most of emerging technologies.

We're hiring three exciting new opportunities: AI Engineer, Senior AI Engineer, and AI Data Engineer.

This is your chance to build cutting-edge AI solutions that reach millions of customers across Australia's leading retailers. You'll work at the forefront of emerging technologies, solve complex business challenges, and help accelerate our AI transformation journey.

The AI Engineer will build AI and GenAI solutions that solve real business problems. Working in a multidisciplinary team, the AI Engineer takes ideas from early technical exploration through to production — building agents, RAG solutions, APIs, automated workflows and the services needed to connect AI applications to existing systems. This role contributes to technical design and independently owns meaningful parts of a solution, working closely with Senior AI Engineers and AI Data Engineers, and is expected to understand the engineering around the model, not just the model itself.

What you’ll do

  • Build, test and operate AI and GenAI applications
  • Develop agents, RAG solutions, workflow automation, APIs and integrations
  • Write clean, maintainable and well-tested production code
  • Own defined parts of a solution from design through to deployment and support
  • Contribute to architecture and technical design discussions
  • Use the team’s established engineering patterns and improve them when delivery experience shows a better way
  • Build automated tests and evaluations for AI behaviour as well as conventional software behaviour
  • Add the tracing, monitoring and logging needed to understand how solutions behave in production
  • Integrate AI applications with enterprise APIs, data sources and business systems
  • Diagnose problems involving application code, prompts, models, retrieval, integrations or infrastructure
  • Participate in code reviews and technical design reviews
  • Work with AI Data Engineers to make the right enterprise data available to AI solutions
  • Work with cyber, architecture, platform, data and governance teams to meet enterprise requirements
  • Test emerging models and tools when there is a clear reason to do so
  • Document useful patterns and contribute reusable components back to the wider engineering community
  • Use AI coding tools and automation heavily in your own day-to-day engineering work

What you’ll need

  • Solid software engineering experience building and supporting production applications
  • A tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field is desirable but not essential.
  • Hands-on experience with LLMs or GenAI development
  • Experience running an AI, ML or GenAI solution in production
  • Experience integrating applications with APIs, databases and other systems
  • Experience working with cloud platforms and cloud-native services
  • Experience working in a large enterprise technology environment
  • An understanding of common GenAI patterns such as RAG, agents, tool use, prompt design and structured model outputs
  • Good software engineering fundamentals across source control, automated testing, CI/CD and observability
  • Experience with Azure AI, Azure OpenAI, Google Vertex AI or similar services, agent frameworks, embeddings, vector search and RAG
  • Experience with containers and cloud deployment, and familiarity with infrastructure-as-code
  • An understanding of what changes when a prototype becomes a production service
