About the Role
The Vehicle Technology Specialist will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and support of all technology systems deployed across Kinetic's bus fleet operating throughout Australia.
This role requires a strong foundation in automotive electrical systems combined with expertise in onboard technology platforms including telematics, CCTV, passenger WiFi, fare ticketing devices, and network infrastructure.
The successful candidate will conduct technology discovery assessments, resolve urgent technical issues, lead the deployment of Teltonika routers as unified network gateways, and ensure reliable operation of all in-bus systems across diverse service types including public transport, school bus operations, coach services, charter services, and rail replacement services.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure and maintain in‑bus technology across a large bus fleet, including telematics, CCTV, passenger WiFi and fare ticketing systems
- Lead the rollout and support of onboard network infrastructure, with Teltonika routers as the central gateway
- Perform auto‑electrical work related to onboard technology (wiring, power distribution, fault finding)
- Provide hands-on troubleshooting and rapid resolution of in‑bus technology issues to minimise vehicle downtime
- Diagnose and resolve connectivity and 4G/cellular network issues affecting onboard systems
- Design, configure and support secure, reliable onboard networks (VPNs, firewalls, segmentation)
- Conduct fleet-wide technology assessments, identifying gaps, risks and opportunities for standardisation
- Partner with IT, workshops and fleet teams to deliver installations, upgrades and ongoing support
- Ensure all work meets Australian electrical standards, safety requirements and privacy obligations
What You Will Bring
- Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology or equivalent qualification.
- Current Australian Auto Electrician license/certification.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience as an auto electrician, preferably in commercial vehicle or fleet environments.
- Demonstrated experience with installation and maintenance of electronic systems in vehicles (telematics, cameras, communication devices).
- Strong understanding of vehicle electrical systems, 12V/24V circuits, CAN bus systems, and automotive wiring standards.
- Practical knowledge of networking concepts including IP addressing, routers, WiFi, and cellular/4G connectivity.
- Proven troubleshooting skills and ability to diagnose complex technical problems systematically.
- Excellent attention to detail with strong documentation and record-keeping abilities.
- Valid driver's license (heavy vehicle license highly desirable).
- Willingness to travel across Australian locations as required to support the national fleet.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload across multiple sites and priorities.
