About the role

Water Corporation is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join our Data & Analytics team, providing advanced analytics and data science capability to support evidence‑based decision‑making across the organisation.

This senior technical specialist role is responsible for the end‑to‑end delivery of data science solutions — from problem definition and analysis through to model development, validation, deployment and ongoing support. You will apply advanced statistical, mathematical and computational techniques to deliver actionable insights, predictive models and decision‑support tools that create real value for the business.

What the role will involve:

Data Science & Advanced Analytics

  • Deliver high‑quality analytical insights and predictive outcomes using data science tools, models, algorithms and techniques to support organisational decision‑making.
  • Apply advanced statistical, mathematical and computational methods, including coding in Python, to perform complex data analysis.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business needs and translate these into analytics questions and technical requirements.
  • Collect, cleanse, assess, manipulate, analyse and visualise complex datasets to address business problems and opportunities.
  • Review, validate and verify analytical outputs to ensure results are accurate, fit‑for‑purpose and aligned with business requirements.
  • Create and maintain high‑quality technical and analytical documentation.

Analytics Standards & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop, apply and improve standards, procedures and best practices for data science and analytics to increase consistency, efficiency and capability maturity.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of analytics processes, tools and methodologies across the Corporation.

Technology Service Management

  • Apply change management practices to support the successful implementation and adoption of data science products.
  • Provide second‑level technical support and advice for data science models and algorithms.
  • Assist in the investigation and resolution of incidents and performance issues, implementing improvements to prevent recurrence.
  • Recommend application and infrastructure enhancements based on system performance and user interaction.

Ethics and Compliance

  • Perform all duties in accordance with relevant legislation, regulatory requirements, corporate policies and ethical standards.
  • Act in line with Water Corporation’s Code of Conduct, Equity and Diversity Policy, health and safety obligations and accountability frameworks.

Key skills and experience:

  • Degree qualification in mathematics, statistics, computer science or a related discipline.
  • Substantial experience applying data science techniques such as time series analysis, geospatial analytics, optimisation, supervised and unsupervised learning, neural networks, deep learning and feature engineering.
  • Proven hands‑on experience developing, training, testing, deploying, maintaining and supporting advanced analytics models using Python or R.
  • Strong experience engaging with business stakeholders to elicit requirements and translate them into technical data science solutions.
  • Experience working with data engineers on data acquisition, ETL processes and data warehouse platforms.
  • Experience working in agile or modern software development environments (e.g. Scrum, Agile, XP) using tools such as Jira and Git‑based repositories.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving and decision‑making capability, with the ability to communicate complex insights clearly and effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to tell compelling stories with data and present insights using visualisation tools such as Power BI.
  • Excellent communication and relationship‑management skills, with a strong results‑focused and accountable work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, demonstrating creativity, curiosity and a passion for analytics.
