About the role:
Regional Western Australia is full of opportunities. We currently have available a Welder Observer/Trades Assistant.
Based in Merredin, you will be reporting to the Team Leader - Civil.
You will undertake a variety of duties in a workshop environment and in the field across the district.
What the role will involve:
You’re the type of person who is comfortable working in a flexible but supportive workplace. You are flexible in your work environment and are as comfortable working on site as you are in a workshop assisting in fabrication, welding and performing scheduled maintenance on Corporation assets.

You’re always looking to develop and expand on your skills including:
- Carrying out operation and maintenance tasks requiring use of specialist tools, plant, and equipment
- Assist in the fabrication and maintenance of Water Corporation assets across the region (solder, spot or tack weld components using appropriate welding machines)
- Perform assembly and dismantling operations, such as bolting / unbolting pipe fittings and structures
- Occasionally, you will be required to work away from home that requires overnight stay/s
- Additionally, you will ensure legislative requirements are met and manage the safety and wellbeing of the welder when working in a field environment.
Key skills and experience:
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with effective communication skills.
The role involves regular manual handling tasks, and appropriate support or adjustments will be provided to ensure a safe and inclusive working environment for all candidates.
Your ability and willingness to travel, stay overnight, and work away from your usual location will be key to thriving in this role.
Your dedication to Occupational Health and Safety including hazard identification and well-developed communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this position. You have the ability to work in a close team environment.
You will also ideally possessing strong experience with:
- Experience assisting Boilermakers, Welders, Mechanical Fitters, Machinists, or other tradespeople.
- Exposure to metal fabrication work will be highly regarded.
- Basic interpretation of drawings
- Experience in pipeline cement rendering
The following are desired but not essential:
- WA ‘MR’ Class drivers’ licence
- Relevant High-Risk Licenses, including Dogging, Vehicle Crane, and Forklift
- Experience operating excavators and bobcats is advantageous but not essential
