The School of Environmental and Life Sciences is one of five Schools within the College of Engineering Science and Environment. As the largest School in the College, the School of Environmental and Life Sciences (SELS) offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The School maintains numerous internationally significant research activities with substantial numbers of higher degree research students, as well as excellent research facilities.

The School of Environmental & Life Sciences is seeking to appoint a research-intensive academic in the field of Geology & Geoscience to undertake a special project initiative. The successful candidate will establish and sustain a research program that is engaged with industry and is complementary to their existing research strengths. We are looking for someone with significant knowledge and experience in geology with application to earth and environmental resource understanding and management.

This position is based in the discipline of Earth Science at the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan Campus and is jointly funded by controlled entity, TUNRA. It is a great opportunity to work with a young, vibrant, and growing Earth Science department with recently appointed academics with expertise in hydrogeology, ocean and coastal geoscience, and remote sensing.

How will you inspire us

The successful candidate will have:

• Completed a doctoral qualification in earth science, geology or related area with core expertise in geology, and in additional allied areas of environmental geology, geochemistry, or geophysics.
• Demonstrated record of publication in high-quality outlets including evidence of international and national research collaborations and/or partnerships in geology, geophysics, environmental geoscience and/or geochemistry that compliments existing expertise in Earth Science.
• Skills and experience in active supervision of honours, masters, and/or Higher Degree by Research postgraduate research projects.
• Demonstrated recent ability to undertake high quality and state of the art undergraduate or postgraduate teaching in Earth Sciences more broadly.
• Demonstrated recent ability to contribute at undergraduate, honours, and postgraduate levels, taking responsibility for the preparation and delivery of course modules and coordinating one or more courses.
• Ability to efficiently perform in allocated internal roles, sharing academic service responsibilities, contributing to outcomes of internal committees, and developing external collaborations.

 Additional desirable attributes include:

• Skills and experience in data science and analytics using Python and/or R programming languages for both research and teaching purposes.
• Experience using site scale spatial data, in particular, drone data with application to geology, geophysics, environmental geoscience and/or geochemistry.
• A CASA RePL Licence.
