Be Challenged and Imagine with us
Are you an experienced electrician who enjoys more than just fixing things?
Do you like diagnosing problems, coordinating solutions, working with contractors and stakeholders, and seeing the direct impact of your work across a busy and diverse environment?
We’re looking for a Facilities Technical Officer with an electrical focus to join our Infrastructure and Facilities Services (IFS) team.
This is a hands-on, technically focused role where your electrical expertise will be combined with facilities coordination, contractor management, problem solving and customer service. You’ll play an important role in ensuring our facilities, services and assets are operating safely, reliably and effectively for students, staff and the wider University community.
The Role
Working across the University estate, you’ll be responsible for assessing, triaging and resolving facilities issues and ensuring the right people are engaged to get the job done.
You’ll:
- Use your electrical trade expertise to assess faults, identify risks and determine appropriate solutions.
- Coordinate IFS staff and maintenance contractors to deliver responsive and effective maintenance services.
- Undertake regular inspections and identify emerging issues before they become bigger problems.
- Provide day-to-day technical direction to contractors and monitor the quality and progress of their work.
- Coordinate maintenance and facilities services in accordance with relevant technical standards, legislation, safety requirements and University procedures.
- Work closely with University staff, students, contractors and other stakeholders to understand issues and deliver practical outcomes.
- Provide a professional front-line facilities service, representing IFS with confidence and credibility.
- Assist with condition assessments, asset inspections and maintaining accurate asset information.
- Support permits to work, disruption notices and other risk and safety processes.
- Identify opportunities to improve services, maintenance practices and asset performance.
- Use facilities management systems and technology to support effective service delivery, including systems such as Maximo, Archibus and TechnologyOne.
- Prepare reports, plans, proposals and other documentation as required.
Essential Criteria
You’re a qualified electrical tradesperson who brings strong technical knowledge, sound judgement and a practical approach to problem solving.
You’ll ideally have:
- A recognised electrical trade qualification.
- Relevant experience in facilities, maintenance, building services or a similar operational environment.
- General electrical experience and/or High Voltage (HV) experience.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic capability.
- Experience coordinating contractors and/or maintenance activities.
- A strong understanding of electrical safety, compliance and risk management.
- The ability to assess a situation, prioritise competing demands and take appropriate action.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage with everyone from trades and contractors through to senior stakeholders.
- A customer-focused approach and the ability to build constructive working relationships.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple issues and priorities.
- Sound computer skills and the ability to work with facilities management systems and digital tools.
Most importantly, you’ll be someone who takes ownership. You’ll be comfortable getting out into the precinct, investigating issues, asking the right questions and coordinating practical solutions rather than simply passing problems on.
