The Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Enabling Eco-Efficient Beneficiation of Minerals is driving transformational research to support a more sustainable and competitive minerals industry. Funded by the Australia Government through the ARC Centre of Excellence scheme the $35 million Centre is focused on reducing environmental impact, lowering energy and water use, increasing resource recovery, and developing future research leaders for Australia’s green economy.

We are seeking a skilled and adaptable Workshop Craftsperson to join our engineering workshop team and help bring innovative research concepts to life.

In this hands-on and varied role, you will work closely with researchers, professors and to fabricate, modify, test and improve specialised research equipment and pilot-scale technologies. No two days will be the same — one day you may be machining components for a new research prototype, the next assisting with experimental setups, equipment modifications or workshop fabrication projects.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys practical problem-solving, working collaboratively with researchers, and contributing to projects at the forefront of emerging technologies. This includes:

Fabricating and assembling specialised research and pilot-scale equipment using welding, machining and fabrication techniques

Working with a range of materials including stainless steel, Perspex, polycarbonate and plastics using workshop machinery and tools

  • Translating concepts and technical ideas into practical research equipment and solutions
  • Supporting researchers with equipment setup, modifications, repairs and experimental activities
  • Maintaining a safe, clean and collaborative workshop environment
  • Experience in operating a crane, EWP, and driving a forklift is desirable
  • Undertaking training where necessary

This fixed term role is full time (negotiable for part time 4 days per week) for 12 months with potential for extension, at a HEW 6 Higher Education worker Level and is located at Callaghan.

• Has a trade qualification ideally in fitting and turning and strong workshop fabrication experience

• Has experience with machining, fitting, welding and general workshop operations

• Can work independently from broad concepts or instructions to develop practical solutions

• Is adaptable and enjoys working across varied projects and priorities

• Communicates well and works effectively with researchers, students and technical staff

• Has a strong commitment to workplace health and safety

• Enjoys practical, hands-on problem solving and continuous improvement
