Our school

The School of Information and Physical Sciences (SIPS) accommodates the disciplines of Mathematics, Data Science and Statistics, Computing and Information Technology, and Physics. The vision of SIPS is aligned with the University's strategic plan "Looking Ahead" and aims to provide a transformative, modern and relevant learning experience where students acquire practical skills, leading to work and life-ready graduates. The School of Information and Physical Sciences seeks to appoint a Lecturer within the Data Science and Statistics team. The successful candidate will develop high quality research and deliver excellent teaching in key areas within the Data Science, Mathematics and Statistics program areas. 

With the Computer and Information Systems area at the University of Newcastle highly ranked in the 2024 QS subject rankings, recently moving up 2 bands to be listed in the 300 globally, this is a fantastic opportunity for an academic to further develop their career as part of a high performing team.

How will you inspire us

The successful candidate will show themselves as an innovator in new Statistical methodologies and be comfortable with the development of theoretical advances and translation of new methods in applied research.

The essential skills required for this role are:

  • PhD in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, or equivalent relevant field.
  • Strong publication record relative to opportunity
  • Ability to be a highly effective teacher in a tertiary environment, preferably with experience in teaching Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Statistics related courses at the University level.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise research students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract industry/government research funding.
  • Expertise or experience in the development and delivery of online and blended courses.
