What’s the opportunity?          

As a Snowflake Data Architect in Telstra Health’s Architecture and Standards group you will apply your deep understanding of the healthcare industry, data architecture patterns, and the Snowflake Platform to provide a well-architected data and analytics solutions for our customers and partners.

About the role:

The Snowflake Data Architect is responsible for designing and implementing information management solutions that enhance and advance Analytics and Data Warehousing capabilities across Telstra Health’s platforms. This role focuses on developing robust architectures utilising Snowflake and AWS platform ecosystem of services and tools, overseeing data ingestion, transformation and distribution design, and ensuring compliance with data security standards to facilitate best in class data management and governance within the healthcare ecosystem. This position reports into the Lead Data Architect.

The key accountabilities include:

Data Architecture Patterns

  • Design and implement scalable, secure, and high-performance Snowflake data architectures.
  • Develop reusable architecture patterns for data warehousing, data lakes, and real-time data solutions.
  • Enable seamless integration of Snowflake with other Platform components and enterprise data systems.

Use of Digital Health Standards

  • Utilise healthcare data standards such as FHIR, HL7 V2, and CDA within Snowflake schemas and data pipelines.
  • Support secure and standardised information exchange between Snowflake, Telstra Health systems, and partner platforms.

Lead Data Modelling and Design

  • Lead the design, development, and optimisation of data models in Snowflake (star/snowflake schemas, data vault, etc.).
  • Ensure data models are modular, scalable, and aligned to business needs and analytic objectives.
  • Promote best practices for data normalization, denormalization, and semi-structured data management (e.g., JSON, XML).

Design and Implement Data Integration Solutions

  • Design robust and efficient ELT pipelines leveraging Snowflake-native tools and integration platforms (e.g. OpenFlow, dbt).
  • Enable real-time and batch data integration from diverse sources, including on-premises and cloud systems.
  • Ensure solutions are commercially viable, sustainable, and technically aligned with evolving business requirements.

Data Security, Governance, and Compliance

  • Design architectures that enforce robust data security, privacy, and compliance controls within Snowflake and the broader cloud platforms ecosystem.
  • Implement role-based access control (RBAC), data masking, and encryption aligned to regulatory standards (GDPR, IRAP etc.).
  • Support data governance and observability initiatives including data cataloging, lineage tracking, and metadata management.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with business units, data owners, engineers, and external partners to gather requirements and drive architectural alignment.
  • Serve as the Snowflake subject matter expert in technical discussions around data strategy, architecture, and integration.

Documentation and Best Practices

  • Create and maintain detailed technical documentation covering data architectures, data models, pipelines, and governance frameworks.
  • Establish and advocate for Snowflake best practices, coding standards, and design principles across teams.

Performance Monitoring and Optimisation

  • Monitor Snowflake workloads and optimise performance through query tuning, resource scaling, Snowflake Trail.
  • Implement proactive strategies to enhance data pipeline efficiency, storage usage, and compute resource management.

Training and Mentorship

  • Provide training and support to team members and other stakeholders on Data Warehousing and Analytics technologies and best practices.
  • Mentor junior architects and developers when required.

About you:

Essential:

  • Bachelor or higher level of computer science, software engineering, information technology or similar.
  • Snowflake certifications.
  • AWS Certified Data Engineer | AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or other cloud platforms certifications
  • 5+ years of data architecture experience.
  • 5+ years of experience designing and implementing solutions using the Snowflake Data Cloud platform.
  • 10+ years working in Data Engineering or similar projects.
  • Proficient in the use of the Snowflake Data Cloud Platform.
  • Extensive experience in dimensional data modelling.
  • Extensive experience in data integration using Medallion-style architecture.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative solutions aligned with Telstra Health's strategy and vision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with AWS ecosystem of services, with the focus on data management e.g. S3, Kinesis, Aurora.
  • Experience with data visualization and BI platforms e.g. Power BI, Tableau.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to solve complex information management problems in cross-functional collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams.

Desirable:

  • Healthcare background
  • Other relevant architecture and relevant I.T. certifications such as TOGAF or CHIA would be highly regarded.
  • Experience working with other database engines e.g. Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL.
  • Experience in using GenAI services and Large Language Models.
  • Familiarity with the HL7 FHIR information standards.
  • Familiarity with healthcare terminologies such as SNOMED CT-AU, LOINC, and ICD-10.
  • Experience with Salesforce Health Cloud.
